I love/hate relationship with people who do that. On one hand, I get to interpret how I want! But that also means teachers can make it way more complicated than it could be.
Well, I know people who think Jonas died, others think he survived and Gabriel died, and more people think that both of them survived. I believe that Jonas did survive, mostly because there are a few more books left in a series, and in one of them, Gabriel and Jonas are older.
I viewed as it as hope, but they don't really survive or die. The story ends there because the plot was getting out, and that happened. It's happily resolved.

Simply interpreted; the ending is hopeful. But, as to our personal interpretation of whether Jonas lives or dies. It is subjective to our understanding and scope of hope. (are we hopeful for our living future? then he lives) Are we hopeful for our dying future? then he dies.) Our understanding of hope subconsciously facilitates our understanding of undetermined thoughts and actions.

My thoughts: The first memory Jonas receives is of a sled going down a hill, and when he reaches the end of the path, he finds a sled. I always thought that the Elder had put the sled there and the path came full circle, putting Jonas back in the Community.
