SOLVED. Novel. Adventure / journey into Alaska [s]

I probably read this about 10 years ago as a teenager. It was written at an adult level.

I think it probably took place at least 100 years ago (maybe during the gold rush?) - some aristocratic guy with his friend and his son and at least one guide (probably) plan an expedition into Alaska, I think from Yukon. Sections of the journey included hiking up a frozen river.

I remember he stubbornly wanted to continue his journey on the route he planned even when other safer options presented themselves, and eventually he completes it but is the only one who made it, for various reasons like the elements, starvation/malnutrition, and injury.

So the friend, the friend's son, and the guide(s) all die? Or is the son related to the aristocrat rather than the friend? Is the aristocrat American or some other nationality?

Is it told in the first person, is he narrating the events back in the 19th century, or is it a nonfiction work by a historian writing about the journey?

I found it! It's Journey, by James Michener. I was thrown off when I was looking for it earlier since I was thinking Michener, but then I just kept getting results for his other more known novel "Alaska", which I knew wasn't it. Turns out Journey was a "spin-off", expanded from a chapter cut from Alaska.
