In the book, Hannah started to lose her memories. While she was losing her memories she also lost the identity of Hannah, and totally became Chaya. That also happened to all the women in the book according to Hannah due to the fact that they all looked the same when they got their hair cut. Hannah didn't like that idea of remembering where she came from and what troubles her ancestors had to face. Chaya couldn't have forgotten because her and her brother were the only ones left of their family and if they didn't remember their identity or history who would for them? Chaya had no choice but to do so. After returning from her wild trip backwards Hannah then realizes why they always remember. They remember for their identity and to pass on to their next generations.
