SOLVED. Fantasy/science fiction read between 2000-2005 [s]

So. Once upon at time in High School- I read a book. This was between 2000-2005. It was set in future earth where the main character was quite vapid and petty. The characters could change genders, appearance, and everything on a whim.

When the main character was getting bored, she wanted a child. So she went to the government and they told her she needed to get another person's DNA to do it. Well, she decided to give her own and they got super angry and banished her.

Her 'best friend' went with her at this time- but she didn't know it. Her best friend was in love with her and changed his/her body to this ugly short little creature as s/he just wanted to spend time with her...

It has been over 10 years since I read this book. I cannot remember the author of the title but Dangit- I want to read it now that I am older. Any suggestions would be amazing. I know if I just read the description I would remember it again. Please help :(

That is definitely Biting the Sun by Tanith Lee

That is actually two books that were originally published separately.
Don't Bite the Sun and Drinking Sapphire Wine

The part about being banished is in the second book.
They are also called the 'four-bee' series because that was the name of the city.
