Why would he find that letter troubling?

You mean the letter from the Wall that he was reading with the maester, or the one he read to Stannis? (Though I think it's actually the same letter.)
If you're talking about the first one, I think it's because Stannis is currently in no position to send great power to the Wall (or even a small one, for that matter) and the fact that they are asking despite that means that they are desperate. And when the Wall is desperate, it is never a good thing.

That makes sense. Davos was talking about his experiences with the wildlings and with the Night's Watch so that could be it-he has a better grasp on what could go wrong if the Wall were to fall/fail.

OK Davos's character really grows on me. I mean, I find his chapters super boring at first, but as the story goes I just find him a really really likeable man. Super devoted, loyal and I really like the way he talked of his sons and family (I almost cried with him when he learned their deaths). Like I could feel his pride and joy seeped through the pages.

And Davos learning to read was the most AWW thing ever. I just think Davos was really an AWWworthy kind of guy.

Yes, well, I think one of the reasons why Stannis and Davos are so close (I think the onion knight is the closest Stannis ever had to a friend, though I'd love to know more about his childhood and how he became the bitter man he is now) is that they are too much alike. One is prideful and slightly arrogant, while the other is "I know my place and will not reach above my station" kind of guy. yet they are both extremely loyal and dutiful to those who've earned their respect. So I guess it's no wonder that Davos chose to learn how to read, so he could be more useful as a Hand, yet how many others would do it?
