A bit of speculation...do you think Sebastian will allow Hero the freedom she wants in their marriage? Given his still strong feelings for Kat, do you believe he can develop deeper ones for Hero? Does their marriage have a shot?

Phrynne | 607 comments I speculate that they will flounder around for ages secretly falling in love with each other. Eventually something will happen that makes them admit it and then they will become a great team of detectives:) Not sure what will happen to Kat but she will disappear from the narrative in some way.

I like your speculation, Phrynne! I think they'll team up as detectives immediately. He'll use her sharp mind to bounce off ideas and she'll take the initiative to use her resources for sleuthing. They'll make a great team.

I agree that they'll go for some time developing deeper feelings, maturing slowly and that works for me. His revelation will occur when he realizes his pain about Kat has completely diminished. They'll stay friends but out of respect for his wife, keep his distance.

Lauren (laurenjberman) | 2240 comments Hero is not the kind of woman to allow any man, not even her husband, to walk all over her.

I think Sebastian is smart enough not to try it and pity him if he does, lol!

Sebastian and Hero already respect one another and there is an obvious physical attraction. It won't take much for that to develop into an emotional attachment. I really hope that he comes to love her even more than Kat because she is his perfect match.

Well said, Lauren.

Charlene (charlenethestickler) | 1392 comments Especially when he becomes a father, I think he will want to be a faithful husband. His memories of his mother's lover, his childhood, and then her desertion will not diminish.

But didn't Sebastian say in this book that he could not marry unless/until he could give his whole heart? Only the baby would do that enough to remove Kat enough from his heart to give Hero a chance, in spite of his honorable intentions. I hope there are no more hindrances in this part of the story.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 694 comments I don't think Sebastian could keep Hero from doing whatever she darn well wants to, lol. If Jarvis couldn't manage it, Sebastian certainly can't, lol. In all seriousness though, Sebastian isn't the type of man who would want to stifle his wife in any way. One of the things that he's come to like and admire about Hero is her courage to do the things that other women in their social set would shrink from. And since Hero was already doing her own research into the murder on her own, and sharing her findings and thoughts with Sebastian, I see no reason for that to change should they get married.

Me too. Kat was his first love and while that will always be a special thing, it's not necessarily the deepest love he will ever know. I know that I have fond memories of my first love but I will always be grateful that things didn't work out between us because that set me on the path to eventually meet my husband and I wouldn't trade him for the world...even if he doesn't clean the bathrooms to my standards. ;-)

But I did love all the little bits where Sebastian was noticing "the long sweep of (Hero's) dark lashes", or her "long, graceful neck", or her "smooth cheek", or the her "lavender scent". Hero may not be the type of supermodel pretty that Kat seems to be, but I think that she's becoming more and more attractive in Sebastian's eyes the more he gets to know her.

He did, but circumstances seem to be altering his plans. How his emotions may change or not remains to be seen.

This is why I ended up binge reading the entire series when I first found it. I just had to know.

Hero's beauty isn't physical. It is in her intelligence, spirit and courage. Kat's beauty is superficial. She lacks the honest and integrity that would make her truly beautiful.

I paid attention to these observations, too. They mean something and are in his subconscious.

Joanna | 139 comments He won't try to keep her under thumb.

As far as their relationship, I keep going back to two sentences from the previous book Where Serpents Sleep. "And he thought, This is what life feels like. This is what a woman feels like." I think he already has deeper feelings for Hero but is blinded by his infatuation with Kat. I hope so anyway. Hero deserves to be truly loved.

I like how you connect this, Joanna.

I've always loved those lines.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 242 comments I can't see Sebastian making Hero change. He admires her as she is. She is a woman ahead of her time.

Also, I wonder if his mother was frustrated with her position and that is why she strayed or needed to escape. That has to be in the back of Sebastian's mind.

I know he won't cheat on Hero if they marry. He told his father he wouldn't have a mistress when the Earl told Sebastian to keep Kat a mistress instead of marrying her. I do wonder if Sebastian will secretly lust after Kat in the future. I think Hero would sense that and it will hurt her if he does.
