I can't understand Davos' devotion to Stanis.. Really. He cut his fingers off... It's sick.

thoughts while reading:

I find it interesting that Stannis doesn't even really want the crown. He's just about whatsbroght and honor until the end (like Ned!).

Well, Stannis explained that already - the good deeds should be rewarded, but the bad ones should be punished and one does not compensate for the other. Cutting his fingers off was justice. He might have lost his head, mind you. Davos knows that and I think he never meant to be an outlaw. He's from Flea Bottom, remember? Maybe he had no other way to make a living but to become a smuggler, that doesn't necessarily mean he liked it. He's always been an honest man, I think, and Stannis gave him a chance to live an honest life as well. A lesser man would have been mad and sought revenge, perhaps. I respect Davos for his loyalty. And besides, Stannis is the rightful king. Would make a good one, too, unlike some otjer rightful kings I could mention (ahem, Aerys, ahem, Viserys).
