Noah Dorsett I learned a lot from reading "The Name of the Wind". Firstly, I learned a lot about characterization. Everyone always tells you to show not tell and Rothfuss is really quite good at this. He will rarely outright tell you something and will often let his dialogue give brief glimpses into the character. This is interesting because a lot of people will use actions to characterize people but Rothfuss has this subtle way of working it in to dialogue that is really interesting.
The next thing I took away from this book was the interesting structure. The narrator is a character telling his life story to a scribe who is writing it all down. This provides a lot of interesting places where you aren't quite sure if the narrator is embellishing the story or if he is actually telling the truth.
Lastly I learned some a lot about pacing. It is hugely important in this book because he often cuts back to the present day character to characterize him more. With all these cuts back to the present time you would think it would kill the forward momentum of the story but the author picks great places to take a break in the story then immediately builds the excitement back up when you return to it.

I have just finished reading this!! I was very impressed with every aspect of the book. It truly was unlike any other fantasy novel i have read. The detail and the care that was put into the character establishment was absolutely breathtaking. Essentially, the entire book is setting the reader up for the next two, yet somehow i was engaged in the text from beginning to end. I never wanted to stop turning the page! I feel like i know the characters on a personal level, yet Kvothe, the main character, in spite of being inside his head, i know so little. It has kept me on edge and i can't wait to read more about him, and find out how he became such a legend.

Marykay Enjoy Kvothe while you can because the Doors of Stone appear to be locked - and the key is lost. Or they lack hinges. Unhinged and knocked askew by the pounding of promises broken.

Minnu I loved this book, and I couldn't stop turning the pages, till the end!
Kvothe is a fascinating character. At times, he appears so sharp, he could cut himself, then again, sometimes he exhibits so much naivety and recklessness, that one cant help but sigh in frustration...
All in all, it is an amazing story and I can't wait to see how Rothfuss shapes up the next book.
