I am doing that bullet proof coffee thing (Dave Asprey). No lunch, but not hungry until dinner. Not so sure if I am a believer yet.

message 52: by [deleted user] (new)

It seems that we are not big lunch eaters here.

Also, good luck to you, Paige. Although I understand the premise, don't think I could stick to that one, especially since I was reading about adding Kerrygold butter to the coffee. Hmmm ...

May 13 (Friday): What lifts your spirits when life gets you down?

message 55: by [deleted user] (new)

Listening to upbeat music, going to yoga, hugging a friend, recalling a happy memory or indulging in a mocha Frappuccino.

Paige P (paigepradko) | 74 comments Leah wrote: "May 13 (Friday): What lifts your spirits when life gets you down?"

I am never just "down" without a reason. So, what ever the reason, I tend to talk to someone I trust, my husband, my sister, one of my close friends. Then, I do like to cuddle up and maybe just make myself as comfortable as possible until I am feeling better.

message 57: by Marti (new)

Marti (coloreader) Call my best friend of 47 years. We met in seventh grade and I love her dearly. She never fails to "get" me.

I'm rarely "down" ... but whenever I feel a little "stuck" on life's journey, I re-read the Dr Seuss book Oh, The Places You'll Go!. It never fails to inspire and revive my spirit.

Monday, May 16 .... What are you planting in your garden this year?

message 60: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (trakka) I am not a gardener but my youngest planted 2 sunflower seeds in a little pot at her Rainbow group and gave them to me for Mothers Day (March in the UK) and we have enjoyed watching them grow so tall. They are now bigger than her and are about to flower. Beautiful!

message 61: by Tanya D (new)

Tanya D (tdrosebud) | 19 comments I live in an apartment and only have a very shaded balcony so my plant choices are limited. I usually get impatiens, coleus, and a hosta or 2.

message 62: by [deleted user] (new)

We have tomatoes, bell peppers and green beans trying to grow right now.

message 63: by Paige (new)

Paige P (paigepradko) | 74 comments I used to have many gardens, vegetables, perennials and a water garden, but we downsized 2 years ago and now live on a golf course and watch others maintain the grass. I have a few flowers planted and a few containers around the deck. I am trying to keep it simple because I can go overboard with plants.

I live in an apartment with a balcony so space is limited. But I hope to plant jalapenos, tomatoes, basil, cilantro, green peppers, lettuce, and a few other things. Still wait for our weather to warm up more consistently (it's supposed to be in the 40s and 50s this week). I want to teach my son to garden this year now that he's older.

We don't usually plant anything edible because our gardens are on the north side of the house and don't get a lot of sun. Also, we have LOTS of critters who think we've planted their luncheon buffet as it is.

But our next door neighbor's teenage daughter is itching to get her hands in the dirt. She spent a year at a boarding school out west where they cared for animals and gardens and she loved that outdoor work. Since Hubby had his back surgery his gardening is limited this season and he's accepted her offer to come and do "whatever - I'll even weed!" Her first question was about veggies ... so he gave her a corner of yard where we have some pachysandra that isn't doing so well, and she dug it all out. They're going to the garden center this coming weekend to get more topsoil, compost, and some green peppers, beets, onions, basil, chives and thyme. We'll see ....

In the meantime Hubby had our handyman fill all the planters with new potting mix and move them to the patio and various spots in the garden. Our teenage helper will plant those with annuals.

I might get started if it ever quits raining. I will have raspberries, cantaloupe, asparagus, onions, watermelon, pumpkins, and carrots for sure.

I hope it stops raining soon, Koren. It has been an especially cold May in Michigan this year.

Last week a photographer took professional pictures for my business website (being updated soon). I had to wear 3 different outfits (dress, suit, casual outfit). It was the first time in my life that I had my makeup & hair professionally done. I hated every minute of it. I sure hope the pictures turn out, because I am never doing that again! Clothes, hair, makeup, nails - it was all too much for me. I am a pretty low to moderate maintenance kind of woman.

Marti (coloreader) Leah wrote: "May 17 (Tuesday): What was the last event you dressed up for?"

I sort of dressed up for my anniversary dinner at Roy's in Oahu last October. I wore a dress, anyway! As we walked back to our hotel, a random lady stopped and told me how lovely I looked! It was an amazing comment and I so appreciated it.

Marti (coloreader) Leah wrote: "May 18 (Wednesday): What is the most valuable life lesson you learned from your parents?"

I don't think they intended to teach me this, but the lesson is don't give up. They never made me finish anything. I started piano lessons and quit. I regret that. I went to college, but didn't finish. I regret that.

What I hope to leave to my kids is family above all. With the exception of God, of course. I became close with my brother, sister and a couple of cousins in the last ten years or so and I wish I had done so sooner.

My friend's wedding about 16 years ago. My niece is getting married this summer, so I'll be dressing up for that.

message 74: by Amy (new)

Amy What a beautiful question! My parents taught me so many things. I'm going with first responses that entered my head. Number One: attitude of gratitude! Savor each moment and seek pleasure, joy, humility, and spirituality in it. Number 2: love is the most important thing, love is all there is, so act accordingly. Number 3; live fully. Sort of a combination of the first two. Live in the moment, love fully, go big or go home! Experience! I pray I am teaching my three sons the same values, every single day. I am blessed for my parents. Still living, loving, and growing.

What wise parents, Amy. And yes, I know that you are passing that wisdom to your sons.

Working... :-(

message 83: by Amy (new)

Amy As usual, I am a couple of days behind. Totally decked out dressed up for my son's bar mitzvah in late March. For one evening I outdid myself. Yup, I was gorgeous. Maybe that's why I felt so low getting ready for the gala event for the Federation of Special Needs last Friday. My friend was chairing it. Nothing I put on worked or felt right. My jewelry knotted in a clump. I felt hormonally off. Was a rare poor night. Isn't it interesting how our beauty matters to us. You'd think we could get by and away with our literary smarts and range! But no, we have to be pretty too... Another chance next weekend to blend the two. Wish me luck.

Finish a run for the chicken coop, plant the lilacs I got for Mothers Day (which means a trip in the truck for topsoil), maybe a drive in the mountains. Convince my SIL to scoop the yard from the mess his two dogs have made since last weekend!!

I live such a fantastical life...

Volunteer at the museum, as usual. And spend time with the family. My husband has been on a business trip for the last week and me and the son really miss him! He'll be home around 11pm tonight finally!

Saturday my local library is celebrating it's 30th birthday ... pony rides, a bouncy house, fire truck, hot dogs, rootbeer, cake, etc, etc, etc. I'm on the board, so I'll be there all day.

Sunday I'm going to see a performance of Pirates of Penzance ... I'll be ready for a few laughs!

Usually as soon as I get into my car the news comes on so I listen to that. Then I have a little think about what happened during the day to get it out of my system. Then I look forward to seeing the family!

I TRY to listen to my audio book, but I frequently think about what's for dinner, how my work day went, why traffic is so bad, what I need to do tomorrow, ....
After about a mile, I "re-wind" and beginning listening to the audio book in earnest.

My drive home from work is only 5 minutes so usually I'm trying to find something on the radio and just as I find a good song I pull into the driveway.

I'm retired, so I no longer have a commute. I usually have a toddler in the back seat that I'm trying to entertain!

Happy anniversary!

As for the QOD ... CHRISTMAS
I love everything about it ... the decorations, the cookies, the trees, the lights, the smells of good things baking, the family get togethers, the cookies, the presents (both shopping/wrapping gift to give, and getting gifts), the church services, the cards, the cookies, and the MUSIC. In fact, I have specified that for my funeral - regardless of time of year - I want Christmas music played.
