As this is a biography the only person we really know is the author and he was not my favourite person.
The person I most liked in the novel was the Arab who made him feel safe after the scary shopping trip.

I liked Amos but I also liked his father.
I did not like all the characters. I didn't especially like his mother but then she was an unhappy person. I liked Amos's father and I think I liked one set of his grandparents.
It's and interesting question because they were more than book characters -- based on real people with their complexities and positive and negative characteristics. I felt incredibly sad for his mother and liked her during moments when she wasn't in the clutches of her depression. In fact, in many ways this book read like a love letter to his mother. At times I liked his father and other times found him irritating - and I disliked the fact that he carried on with other women.

I also felt incredibly sad for the mother. I kept wishing she would have been born in another time period where she could have got proper mental health. I also agree with you that this was a love letter to his mother as she played such a big part of the story that he chose to tell.
