message 6: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Millard I finished Rise of Empire last night and am really hooked. Since it'll be a couple of days before Heir of Novron gets here, I've started The Man With the Golden Torc. It's not my thing so far, but it is different, and someone was so kind as to loan it to me.

I aim to finish the Riyria Revelations and, if possible, catch up on Django Wexler's Shadow Campaigns this month.

message 7: by Jenna (new)

Jenna Kathleen (jennakathleen) I'm reading Academ's Fury after reading the first book in the series for my A-Z challenge. So far the series is good; I was in need of a nice light read and for YA, this is one of the better ones. It's shelved as both Adult and YA so the target age is a bit of a blur and although it is rather childish, I am enjoying it a lot more than most of the other YA out there.

I must go and see if I can add anything to my challenge. That's another job on my list...

Monica Davis Two books in the works: Hounded is entertaining; and Little, Big is interesting, but slow paced in story development.

message 21: by Daniel (new)

I was going to nominate this for the July read. Only saying because I'm doing a little campaigning for it. ; )

I'm keen to read it but I'll have to wait as the kindle version is almost£10, way too much money.

Squire (srboone) I'm resuming my Epic Shannara Quest with The Scions of Shannara. I'm planning on staying on the quest now until completed.

message 29: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan | 17 comments I am currently a little over half way through Broken Eye by Brent Weeks. Really enjoying the book, which is starting to gain steam. Maybe it's because I just read Mistborn Final Empire, but the writing style in the Lightbringer series reminds a lot of Sanderson (in a good way).

Not sure what I'm going to read next, but the next Mistborn novel and Hyperion by Dan Simmoms are both high on my tbr list.

message 30: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin Francis I'm currently reading Shadows of Selfby Brandon Sanderson. I devoured the first three Mistborn books and started on the next series set some 300 years later.

I liked The Alloy of Law, Wax is an interesting character and I enjoy Wayne's antics but I am not so sure about this one. I find Marasi on the annoying side. I also miss the characters from the original series, Vin, Kelsier and Sazed especially. But it's still a good read and I'm only about a third of the way through.

I'll probably move onto the sixth Mistborn novel once I'm done and then maybe finish one of the other books I started months ago and got bored with...(Magician)

Finished The Bands of Mourning and I rated it 5 stars. This is the best Mistborn book to date. I cannot wait till The Lost Metal comes out.

Bands of Mourning is definitely my favourite of the Wax and Wayne story so far too.

message 33: by Alissa (last edited May 11, 2016 02:11AM) (new)

Alissa | 220 comments I started the month with the most excellent The Death of the Necromancer, the second standalone set in Martha Wells's Ile-Rien world. I liked the previous book but it was standard fare, this one is an outstanding fantasy tale for characterization and plot. A great entry point into Wells work surely.

Then Dubliners, a classic, which was surprisingly good. The short stories are poignant, beautifully written with top-notch descriptions and I liked the themes of escape, routine and death. Not a cheery read but not depressive either.

I've recently finished Maestro, the latest installment in the never-ending Drizzt's series and it was very good. It's very hard not to overstay your welcome after some thirty-odd books but Salvatore pulls it off neatly.

message 34: by Amy (new)

Amy Sanderson | 129 comments I'm currently reading The Rook for the group read, although I haven't got very far into it yet. It's tricky because I've also started Fugitive Prince, and it's impossible not to get this far into a series and not be engrossed!

message 35: by Lára (last edited May 11, 2016 01:38PM) (new)

Lára | 479 comments American Gods: Author's Preferred Text (exactly this edition) - I´ve been going to my university's librarly since Monday just to read this book because it´s not for outside. It´s a bit different from the American Gods I read and disliked. So far, this new one, I like it.

message 36: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished Count Zero [he said, adjusting his mirrored sunglasses] and am of course continuing immediately on to Mona Lisa Overdrive.

message 37: by Jenna (new)

That is actually the edition I read first. I would be interested to read another version to compare. I wonder, is his preferred text longer than the one originally published?

message 40: by Elise (new)

Elise (ghostgurl) | 1028 comments I finished A Natural History of Dragons, which I really liked, and now I've moved on to Morning Star

message 41: by Joshua (new)

Joshua Carlsen I just finished The Lies of Locke Lamora. It was great! I can't wait to start the second one. I haven't decided whether or not I am going to read Forbidden or Mistborn: The Final Empire. I have started Mistborn. I like it but I can always jump to the other one.

message 42: by Tad (new)

Tad (tottman) | 68 comments I read Borderline Borderline (The Arcadia Project, #1) by Mishell Baker by Mishell Baker in about 2 days. What an amazing book. Memorable characters and a fantastic world with an interesting take on the fae. I'm going to remember this one for a long time and it's likely to wind up one of my top reads of the year.

The same won't be the case for The Jewel and Her Lapidary by Fran Wilde The Jewel and Her Lapidary by Fran Wilde which I didn't enjoy at all. Even though it's under 100 pages, it took me forever to get through it. Flat, uninteresting characters and a plot and a world I never really cared about.

When I finish it, I´ll answer. So far, I dislike the book. I very much disliked it the 1st time (to the point of hating it) I´ve read it, mostly because the author made all of the world´s gods American in some way. I´m especially sensitive when they (authors) use Nordic, Hindu or Egyptian gods in their novels. Just a one small mistake and I give them 2 stars down. This book had already gotten 1 star so it can only get more or the same with this new edition.

Ian Hall | 169 comments Just started my wheel of time re-read. I'm excited as I am everytime I do a re-read.

message 47: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 1651 comments Finished Mona Lisa Overdrive and am preemptively starting my July nominee, Katherine Kurtz' Camber of Culdi.

(Which is similar to William Gibson in this one respect, if no other: I haven't read these books in 25+ years.)

message 48: by Margret (new)

Margret Just finished Steelheart. Loved it. Didn't want to wait until June as I'm due to have my second kid in about 5 weeks.

Good to hear - this is a book that has been on my to-read list for a long time. And congrats on the baby!

message 50: by Jenna (new)

Jenna Kathleen (jennakathleen) I finished Scourge of the Betrayer and it was pretty fantastic if you enjoy your fantasy dark and violent. I wrote a short review (spoilers are hidden).
