I like the concept of basing a horror story on an old hotel, so much could be done with that and as watson said "every hotel has its own scandal and ghosts!!"
Mishty is far ahead from all of us... And unfortunately not liking it!! Hope we catch up soon with her and enjoy it :)Have read till chapter 9 and now i see title of chapter 10 Hallorann

Did someone say the word boring?
I'm only 13% done, and this is far from boring. In fact, this is the most exciting book I'm reading in second half of 2016. (First half was awesome, second was, uh.., mediocre.)

I agree on Danny sounding more mature than 5.
I think Watson narration about all these machinery, though unnecessary, added a mystic feeling.

Haven't met this guy named Dick Hallorann yet.

I'm liking it more than Exorcist.
Scary? Not yet.

While its not the best book of 2016, but surely not boring. Interest is slowly building up...Couldn;t read much yesterday night. So I'm yet to begin Chapter 10.
How much you've read Pran? And how bout u liking or not liking it?
I am done with part 2......will start part 3 tonight.Loved Dick Hallorann, and liking other characters too...
I am liking it, and guessing the real thing begins from part 3
50%! Whoa! Are you liking it now Mishty?Sometimes likes and dislikes also depends on the other books you're reading. I had many 2-star reads the past couple of weeks and may be thats the reason to enjoy it more :)
I'm still in the middle of part 2 and would finish part 2 tonight.
And by the way Mishty, how did you know Mr Hallorann's first name was Dick? :P :PYou both say that guy is good then he must be good. Have encountered only a brief (?) conversation in the car so far.
That's the point. He never *tells* Danny... rather Danny reads it. Just like DH reads "doc". Was trying to pull your leg on your shining capabilities ;)
“Mr. Hallorann,” Danny said, grinning. “Dick, to your friends.”“That's right! And you bein a friend, you make it Dick.”
As he led them into the far corner, Jack and Wendy exchanged
a puzzled glance, both of them trying to remember if Hallorann had
told them his first name.
Deal. Generally I avoid reading over weekends.... but will read some this time.By the way, the narration is for winter season... which is kinda like now! Remember mention of 20th Oct (or nearby) when they shift to Overlook.
I'm like 30 % done.
What a book!!
Loving it.
Scary? Uh uh....a little. Actually, "I went in the mirror" scene was a little scary.

It's cold here. In Hindi what they call "Gulabi Sardi"!!
I love all the characters (including Jack, Mishty).
I like how the story's developing slowly.

I'm in the middle of the part third. Which chapter was named Danny?

Btw, I don't like Tony. (-_-)

Yeah its hot here...
But at times you gotta Overlook to have a little fun :P
Arpit wrote: "I love all the characters (including Jack, Mishty).I like how the story's developing slowly."
Mishty is a character?
(Are we reading the same book? *__*)
(view spoiler)
But some chapters in the middle are boring... the ones where there are only descriptions and no dialogues!
I don't hate jack. He is the most interesting character in the book. I like the complexity of his character. The person he actually is, and the person he think's he is.....
@Pran- the person Jack is and what he thinks.... is there a difference?? i think Jack is conscious of his anger and alcohol abuse... guilt feeling and trying to recuperate... how is it different from what he thinks he is?
Gorab wrote: "@Pran- the person Jack is and what he thinks.... is there a difference?? i think Jack is conscious of his anger and alcohol abuse... guilt feeling and trying to recuperate... how is it different fr..."yes, he is aware of his anger and alcohol abuse and all the guilt associated with it. I wasn't talking about that. what I meant was that the way he manipulates even his own thoughts like the first when we got his point of view on the whole George episode, he was adamant that he didn't set the timer ahead. it was only in later chapters that he accepts that he may have done so by "just only a min, out of pity". there are other subtle incidences like this one.......
at one point Danny thinks in concern of Jack that " was it possible, to be glad you had done something and still be ashamed of that something that you tried not to think of it?"
I think this is the perfect way to explain Jack's persona....
I too finished the book. liked it agree with Misty, the ending was good but didn't find the book to be scary -_-
So the ages old idiom of ladies first holds true again :)I'm at the 50% mark...
so you two can actually finish another book while me and arpit snail along :)
:DI'm at 75%now. overall interesting but it felt a bit monotonous when similar things were happening in different parts of hotel....

Danny is 5 and although he has some physic powers his narration part seems way mature than a 5 year old....
I too loved watson, but felt all the detailed explanation about mechanism of heating devices and plumbing etc unnecessary!
