I think most of the shorts were previously published in various anthologies, many of which predated his more recent works (still have yet to read them the "Half" series) so it's not too surprising that they would be in his world of The First Law. Can't wait to pick it up myself!
I've read about a third or half of these stories already, so I'm going the library route on this one. I don't know what's taking them so long! I CANNOT WAIT to read the story about Bethod and his champion . . . .
Finished it and was not impressed. I liked only half of the total 13 stories, the rest were disjointed/boring/flat/meatless. I guess my expectation was too high.

^^^^^^ Me too.
^^^^^^ Me too.
I agree that some of the stories were on the mediocre side.Having said that, this compilation was worth it for the chance to experience Sand Dan Glokta in full health and full arrogant glory. What the story implies is more important than the story itself.
On the whole, the compilation makes for a decent read. Even the mediocre stories aren't absolutely dreadful.
I liked the first (Glotka) and last (Bethod) stories. The rest were "meh." I didn't care for Shev and how much of the story was about her and Javre (though I liked Javre a bit more). The book was worth it for the $2.99 price I got it for, but I think the other novels are much better. Especially The Heroes.
