Some entry level questions

Hello,

I've been writing for many years simply as a hobby and a way to entertain my daughter. After I was recently laid off from a long career I decided to clean out the office and I found a series of books I'd written that my daughter enjoyed, but outgrew long ago. With my extra free time, I thought it might be worth the effort, or at least fun, to try and create an ebook series from these. I apologize in advance if this is not the correct forum for these types of questions as I am actually new to ALL forums...not just this one.

My question is about how to create a cover? I've spent the last couple days researching eBook sites and it seems like after I've added my email adress then I'm asked to pay. Are there ways to create covers and ebooks that don't require you to pay first?

Also, are there any forums out there with authors or readers that are willing to read one of my stories and give candid feedback? I've never actually had an adult outside my family read one. It's basically a series about a squirrel that solves crazy problems around his neighborhood. The stories actually all rhyme and have a little mystery for the kids to solve along with the squirrel along the way.

PickMonkey.com offers an option to create a cover free of charge as does http://www.myecovermaker.com/.

I have used both with good success. Hope this helps!
