SamZ (samwisezbrown) Discussion below about the Hobbit. My siblings may or may not write their names on cups in elvish....and I may or may not have a nephew named after a hobbit..... :) Enjoy!

Kerrie my friend has named their daughter after one of the hobbits. I was one of the few who recognised it lol

Monica Beevers | 22 comments I read this book in 7th grade for English and I'm so surprised by how much more I am remembering! The way that he writes is so clear and it just pulls me into the adventure. Bilbo just escaped from Gollum. Very intense.

Jane Night | 7 comments I had a hard time getting through this series. I loved the movies but Tolkien is just so detailed and many of the things he writes about felt unimoortant to story. I skipped over many of the songs.
Story itself was great though.
Style wise I prefer Tolkiens bff CS Lewis. Anyone read Narnia?

Tracey (traceyrb) I loved this book and hope to get chance to read it again along with you all this month.

Jane Night | 7 comments Kimberly- movies were a bit easier to get through than books but I know I have fallen asleep during them a few times. Moreso the LOTR than the hobbit.
Def worth a view if u can because the story is really cool and middle earth is a great setting. Tolkien just sometimes gets too excited about his setting for my taste.
My brother loves Tolkien and I love CS Lewis and overall we end up enjoying very different books.
Tolkien was very imaginative. I love hobbits! And I def could be a hobbit with loving food and being a homebody.

Jane, I haven't read any of the LOTR books just the hobbit and I admit to not being ready to tackle LOTR book(s) yet. Still have a little ones at home and I'm so glad to have 5 minutes to read the Hobbit. I love CS Lewis!

Kristi | 1 comments I'm new to the group and was a bit scared by this book choice because I just couldn't get into the movie - the one hour dinner scene did me in!!! But it's a classic and my husband and two boys love it so I decided I need to read it.

SamZ (samwisezbrown) Welcome Kristi! I'm so glad that so many of you are giving the Hobbit a try. I, unfortunately, will not be able to jump in this month, but I am loving reading your thoughts - keep the debates coming! I know Tolkien can be pretty wordy in his descriptions, but that is part of what makes his style so unique (and so loved and/or hated by so many)!
If you have time, please check out our other group read books! One of the reasons we pick three is so that you can get a broad view of the genre; also, if you only have time to read one (or can only get one from your library) you can pick your choice!

Monica Beevers | 22 comments Okay so I'm reading the part where they are going through the "safe Short Cut" through the forest.
It made me think of our journey here on earth. We are told that we can make it to the end, stay on the path and we will make it to safety. Then just like the group, we have hardships, we become discouraged and tired, illness strikes, we cant see the light so we start to murmur. Then when we are at our lowest the adversary tempts us. A little light to attract our attention. A little light to draw us off the path.
I don't remember what happens next, but I'm intrigued.

Tracey (traceyrb) Great thoughts Monica. Tolkien was a very devote Christian and even though not a member of the church he obviously felt and was lead by the Holy Ghost in his writings. I believe all great works, whether in art, music or literature, that turn our thoughts heavenwards and glorify God are inspired and of great worth. I think it's great that you found inspiration in your reading.

Monica Beevers | 22 comments The Hobbit is completed and it was fantastic. Life lessons on adapting, friendship, greed, self sacrifice, holding fast to the path, facing your fears, patience, integrity, humility and not giving up.
I recommend this book to everyone.
Thanks for the amazing read for May, I wouldn't have read it again if not for this group! :)

I'm so glad you liked it! I can't wait for school to be out so I can have time to dive into this one! :)

Amy Prater (amymore1027) | 8 comments I am in the middle of moving, but I made sure to keep a copy of this book. I can't believe that I have never read it! I haven't seen the movie(s) either. Will report back on my progress when I can sit down for 5 minutes!
