Megalion | 484 comments At least with Bowie and Rickman, they were 69 and turns out, both at the end of a long battle with cacncer. Lives well lived.

But Prince? 57. Still so young it seems. Johnny Depp is only a few years behind and I can't imagine him dying anytime soon either. Talk about young of spirit there.

I've never been a Prince fan. But it's still shocking to me.

As of this moment, no cause known but he recently cancelled two concerts because of the flu and then had another sudden public illness attack.

Just... wow.

Jennifer Pope (jenjunum) | 902 comments Very, very sad. Prince and Bowie always went together to me. Larger than life. They seemed to have both lived enough for a thousand lives in their short years. We got a dog the weekend Bowie died and named her Ziggy in tribute to Bowie.

You should get a dog this weekend and name it Raspberry Beret!

No! You should name it Pussy Control! Like cat control! Get it?!? I am cracking myself up over here....

Sorry, I just took this lovely thread to a not-so-reverent place. I think Prince would approve.

Megalion | 484 comments I think they both would.

LibraryCin | 11722 comments It is sad. I feel like so many of the 80s icons are leaving us now. The 80s are when I was a teenager, so... :-(

Me too LibararyCin, I was a teenager in the 80s.

annapi | 5505 comments I was 17 in 81, and I remember his music, though my tastes ran more to pop.

Karin | 9248 comments In the early 1980s, tired of hyper DJ's I started listening to classical radio stations, so really didn't hear much Prince. I was still listening to pop radio when Blondie first came out and Madonna (never have been a fan of her voice) and a few others around the late 1970s and early 1980s. But I was a teen in the 1970s. Prince was born the year after my husband.

Kimber (kimberwolf) | 845 comments Prince has always been a favorite for me, and news of his death yesterday made me incredibly sad. I was 16 in 1984, when Purple Rain was in theaters, and I talked my mom into taking me to see it by telling her it was a musical (well, it WAS). She (my mom) texted me yesterday to tell me she was sorry about Prince's passing. I know most of his popular songs by heart, and a lot of good memories are interwoven with his music.

I'm just a couple of years older than you Kimber. I had 1999 and Purple Rain in vinyl and remember seeing Purple Rain in the theaters. My tastes moved away from his style but I always admired his musicality, fashion daring and independence from the corporate record industry. I didn't read a word of my baseball book yesterday after getting the news and just spent the evening looking at slideshows, watching videos, and looping what little i still had of his on iTunes. Sad news.

I hear you, Kate. He was a truly gifted artist and, like Bowie, seemed outside of his time in many ways. My evening was much the same: Reading news stories about what happened, watching videos, reminiscing. I do still have 1999 on vinyl, but my turntable is tucked away somewhere in the basement. They were playing kind of a club medley of his songs on the radio today when I was driving home from work, and I saw a billboard that said "RIP" in purple and the "I" was shaped like a guitar.
