Matt (hypnos164) | 4 comments Hi, I'm Matt, 38 (for a few more weeks yet) from Staffordshire in the UK.

Recently my reading interests seem to have split pretty evenly between:

- Urban Fantasy (Mike Carey, Jim Butcher, Rachel Caine, Tanya huff and loads of others)
- "Regular" Fantasy
- SF
- Crime / Noir - a new genre for me, that I got started on after enjoying Charlie Huston's Joe Pitt books

Welcome, Matt. I don't run across many people who read Huston's Joe Pitt series. I've always considered it more UF, with the whole Vampyre thing going on, but it's definitely got a hard-boiled noir bent to it.

I read Joe Pitt as it was UF; liked it so much I went and read everything else Huston had written.

Then I got some recommendations for other stuff "like" his non-Pitt books and things snowballed from there into a whole new reading genre for me... that's the great thing about forums like this, you never know where it might take you :)

Shott | 1 comments Hi all - my name is Sherry and I joined the group to find new books/authors, etc., and maybe get some good discussion too. Love Kim Harrison, Mark Chadbourne (now in the Kingdom of the Serpent series, Jim Butcher's Dresden Files, Neil Gaimon - Neverwhere - fabulous...I could go on. Not a big fan of romance. Well written escapism is the key! Mother of teenagers and also a french griffon-german wirehair mix (very, very happy dog).

message 206: by Brandy (new)

Brandy Holt (brandy11d) Hey everyone! M name is Brandy. I'm 23, a senior at Tennessee Tech. University and (obviously) love to read! I joined the group so that I can find new authors and books to read. Some of my favorite authors are Richelle Mead, Rachel Cain, Charlaine Harris, P.C and Kristen Cast, Janet Evanovich and lots more. I like to read series rather than stand alone books. My absolute favorite series is the Georgina Kincaid series (Succubus Blues, Succubus Heat, etc.) It is fantastic. I could read it over and over again. I would love to get book ideas from people who also enjoyed that series as much a me.

message 211: by Natacha (new)

Natacha (tacha) | 9 comments Hi! My name is Natacha and I'm 32. I'm married with 2 girls - 8 and 5 years - I use to read a lot when I was a kid but had since lost the love of reading. But about a year and a half ago - when I first noticed the Twilight craze - literally everyone at work was reading it. It got me curious, so I picked up the saga and started reading. I haven't stopped reading since.

I prefer fiction over non - but I've discovered my favorite genre is urban fantasy/romance. My favorite series so far are - The Twilight Saga, City of Bones series, and the Hunger Games series. Recently I've read The Forest of Hands and Teeth, followed by its sequel The Dead Tossed Waves - both excellent reads!

I'm currently writing - hoping for my first published novel - I've always written and made up stories but only for myself and kids - wish me luck!

Looking forward to reading with all of you!

message 221: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Hey everyone,

New to the group, I'm Jackie. I'm from New Mexico and I am the coolest nerd I know! I'm in my last semester of college for English so when I'm not reading those "deep" books for school I prefer a nice UF novel. I'm not going to lie, I'm really into YA fiction. Mostly I look for character development in the books I read and teens have so many more feelings to write/read about.

Summer after graduation is coming so I'm going to start reading for myself again. Yippee!

Shakira Robertson | 4 comments Hi, I'm Shakira. I'm 33, was born an raised in NY, but I've been living with my husband in Texas for the last 12 years.
My Dad 1st introduce me to Sci-fi/Fantasy with the Dragonriders of Pern Trilogy, and I've been hooked ever since. I'm in the middle of reading 2 series right now, the Rachel Morgan Hollows series and the Greenrider series. While I was waiting for the next books in those series to be released, I started reading Moon Called. I'm about half way through it, and finding it hard to put down.

message 224: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (elizabethetherington) Hello!! I am Elizabeth, in my mid-twenties and from Kansas City- but I'm moving to Baltimore, MD this summer. I am SO excited!!

I love Urban Fantasy and Historical Fiction. Yeah, I'm all about the opposites. I read the Anita Blake series up through Obsidian Butterfly in high school, but couldn't find anything like it at the time that I enjoyed, so I moved on from anything fantasy.

Then about this time last year I got a job at a major book store and started getting recommendations from our customers about the Mercy Thompson novels. Not gonna lie, I wasn't impressed with the looks of them, but we had grown women running in to buy the hardcover edition of Bone Crossed. So, my interest was piqued! I read the whole series in a week - even during my 200 mile move to Kansas City. I should have been unpacking- but I wasn't! I cleared off the couch and read.

So... That's how I got into Urban Fantasy. It hasn't stopped since then. I am so excited to have found this group!

Nairabell | 25 comments Hi! I'm Nairabell (Claire), in my mid-twenties and from London, UK. I read all the time and have books pretty much everywhere. I'll read pretty much anything but am happiest reading UF/PNR books. At the moment I'm trying out steampunk books with Steamed by Katie MacAlister - I'd never even heard of them before she announced the book. :)

Kimberly | 7 comments Hi, my name is Kimberly, I am 45 with 2 sons: aged 22 and 18. I live in PA. I have been enjoying reading sci-fi/fantasy since I was a teen. The term urban fantasy is new to me, though not reading them! I am currently reading Simon R. Green's Nightside series. I am a big fan of his Hawk and Fisher series, and so I decided to give these a go.. and I am so glad I did. Looking forward to any suggestions of good UF reads.

message 229: by Anne (new)

Anne (anneb10) | 16 comments Hi, my name is Anne. I recently turned 35, and got into fantasy in my teens, with Piers Anthony's Xanth series. I grew into David Eddings and on from there. I found hard sci-fi when a friend introduced me to David Weber's Honor Harrington series in my late 20's. I had managed to bridge the two (after a fashion) with Laurell K. Hamilton's Merry Gentry series - which led me into Urban Fantasy. Now I read the Dresden Files, the Jaz Parks series, the Greywalker series, and many more. I love Urban Fantasy. ^_^

Nice to meet you all!

message 231: by Becca (new)

Becca (goblinfan) | 215 comments Greetings, I'm Becca from Claysburg, Pa. I'll be 26 in November. I'm currently unemployed and living with my parents, after leaving the military over a year ago. I help my parents whenever possible, and they seem to like having me around. Mostly for reaching the top shelves in the kitchen and figuring out the tv and dvr issues, I suspect. The closest I will ever have to a kid, is my Maine Coon, who will be two in October.
The book that got me hooked was Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton, when I was 11, the summer before 6th grade. Before that, I was at a 3rd grade reading level. By the 8th grade, (and many books later) I was at a 12th grade level. So, I was a bit of a late bloomer, but I haven't stopped reading since.
My favorite series ever is The Chronicles of the Black Company, by Glen Cook. I've been reading more and more UF and Paranormal in the last couple of years. The Walker Papers, Tales of the Nightside, Tanya Huff, and Lilith Saintcrow. Anita Blake started my addiction to vampires. My new favorite series is Felix Castor by Mike Carey, the first is The Devil You Know.
I can't wait to discover new authors/series through here. Sorry for prattling on. It's nice to finally 'talk' to people who read the same books as myself.

Jenny (semicloset_PNRreader) | 1 comments Hi guys :)
My name's Jenny, and I think I'm addicted to reading PNR and UF :)
To be totally honest with you, I'm still struggling with the difference between the two! Hahaha. Help? :|
Anyway, I'm from Melbourne, down in Australia. 18 years old. I've been lurking around goodreads for a few months now and thought I should at least give an intro :)
I started out reading books when I was 16 (thanks to twilight) and then Fallen by Lauren Kate when I was 17. Since then, I've been on a 'must-read-more-fantasy-books' frenzy. Sooo, I ended up here! Story of my life :) ahaha. Right now I'm finishing off Jeanine Frost's 'First Drop of Crimson' and beginning JR Ward's BDB series. As well as... oh, I'm actually reading quite a few books at the same time. Maybe I should take it easy... or not! I think these books are taking over my life right now haha. Can't help it :)
Anywho! There you go :) I'll be floating around goodreads for quite a while, it seems. Have a nice day everybody :)

I love Jurassic Park! My poor copy has been read so many times that I've had to tape the pages back in. I "blossomed" in to a love of reading in 5th grade. Up to that point, I was in the classes after school for help with reading. By 9th grade, I was helping in the class since I had done such a turnaround.

Welcome to the group!

That's what got me hooked on this genre too, the Dragonrider's of Pern series. I was obsessed with these in my teens.

message 247: by Marilynn (new)

Marilynn (Bibliofreak) | 13 comments I have been reading for over 49yrs and my reading taste have changed. Romance to blood and gore now Urban Fantasy with some Sci-Fi thrown in now and again. Some Authors I have read for years others are new. I think, I may be that Peg that will never find its place.

message 248: by Sally (last edited Apr 21, 2010 12:10PM) (new)

Sally (sjanec) | 9 comments I am new to the group from Paradise, CA. I read just about anything. Have been a vampire fan for more than 30 years. Recently have been reading a lot more of what I consider similiar genres, paranormal, psychic. I love Laurell K. Hamilton series as well as Charlaine Harris. I am half way through Yasmine Galenorn's Sisters of the Moon series. I am also reading, Carrie Vaughn, Sherrilyn Kenyon ,Jennifer Armintrout, Richell Mead. I am looking forward to finding other similiar authors. Not sure what exactly is considered Urban Fantasy but seems like people mention many of the authors I am reading or have read in the past. I tend to read multiple books at a time, one at work, one at night, one in the car, ect. Though since I got my Kindle it makes it easier to carry around multiple books on my Kindle and Itouch so I can read the same story in different places without carring around a suitcase, nothing makes me madder than being somewhere with nothing to read or being at a really exciting part of a book and relizing I left my book at work, or at the kids house.
