Urban Fantasy discussion
Welcome to the Group! Introduce yourself...

I am 36, live in Queensland, Australia with my husbands John. We have four beautiful children (animals at times) Stephanie 16, Alisha 15, Kyle 14 and Nikita 10.
I work full-time in Property Management Administration and in my spare time I love to read.
Urban Fantasy are my favorites, along with Paranormal Fantasy, however, I guess I will read anything once. I prefer to own rather than borrow books. Recently I decided to do my bit for the environment (well that's my excuse) and have purchased a Kindle about six months ago. Don't get me started on that subject though!
I'm not sure how I stumbled across good reads, maybe one of my book hunting expeditions on google. It has introduced me to new books I would never know where around, and loving it.
Merry Meet, everyone!

I started with all the Anne Rice and Laurel K Hamilton series, moved into Kerri Arthur, then Black Dagger Brotherhood, and Charlie Huston's Joe Pitt series. I would love any suggestions on where to go from here.

My name is Sarah, I'm from Indonesia.
16 years old and go to hell everyday which called as 'High School.'
really, they should have put 'Hell' in dictionary that refers to 'High School'
I love books since like ages. Actually, I like a lot of books and I'm not stuck with Urban Fantasy genre. I read romance, sci-fi, comedy, and everything. even honestly, I'm not too much into dark romance and I put 'funny genre' the first on my list.
well, my favourite Urban Fantasy ever :
PERCY JACKSON and THE OLYMPIANS. why? because it's funny! I know what you mean, that's book for children and bla bla bla... but they're the best books for you to read when you're upset. They'll make you laugh like crazy over and over again. (I never been bored reading them)

Sarah, Enjoy Hell while you can, the real world is even harsher."
I'll second that, Kerry! Although there are so many things that are better once you are out of HS (aka Hell)... FREEDOM, but it can be hard being on your own too until you get used to it. :)

Agreed, Freedom is good then we go and get married and have kids. Gone with the Freedom. lol.

wow, maybe because I'm still a kid I didn't know about the real world.
but for now, I feel like going to burn my 'Hell' tomorrow.

Don't get me wrong, Sarah, I would NEVER want to go back to high school. Ugh. Didn't like it then and I really wouldn't like it now. :)

Sarah,
Don't know about you but I definitely wasn't a kid a 16yr :P and I'm sure my 16yr wouldn't think she was either. By the real world, just meant alot more to worry about than teachers, students and school assignments, which btw transfer to Boss, Co-workers and deadlines hmm.
HELL is the learning ground not only for education but more importantly I think social interaction. It teach's the foundation steps to being able to interact and integrate into society when you get out of HELL.
Reading is good though, I always have said 'You can always find a friend and an adventure in a book and escape reality for a while'
Good luck with your last two years of HELL.

I have been raiding the posts here for reading recommendations for a while. I went through a paranormal phase in my late teens, early 20's but it was revived again recently by the Twilight series which i bought for my 13 yo daughter then read myself in four days.
I am 36, live in a small town in Australia with my husband and 4 children aged 4, 5, 7 and 13 and read as much as possible in between two part time jobs, commitees and the usual chaos of my day.
I rely on the library, since money is tight, and in a country town that doesnt give me a lot of choices so I am currently trying to persuade them to beef up their paranormal/urban fantasy/horror section. I read alot and I read fast and read most anything though do have preferences and go through phases.
I am so glad I found goodreads as its a fab way to see what is out there though its frustrating to live in Australia where book prices are extortionate and its not always easy to get your hands on what you want.
Anyway - glad to have found the group :)

My name's Jacqui, and I'm a 21 y/o art student in NY. I'm new to goodreads - older sister just got me into it! I'm into a lot of different fantasy and urban fantasy, but lately I can't get enough of anything 19th century and mystery-ish. (Could be that old school Holmes I've been reading. :D)
Cheers, all!
P.S. - and to those Percy Jackson fans, who else is excited for the new movie?

I wanted to recommend bookdepository. I heard about here on goodreads. Sometimes you can find books for as much as 50% off, and it is free shipping...."
Thanks Shannon - I actually just stumbled across the UK site http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/ the other week and went on a bit of an ordering spree - huge savings and free postage and the books came in a week. I will definately be using them again. The Uk site had most of the books i wanted a bit cheaper than the US site :)

But, anyway, I'll take the daily tedium of my job, and even the worries about debt and recession and the house falling apart...
But you couldn't pay me to go through the trauma, drama and turmoil of my high school years again. *shudders*
@Jacqui: I've never read any of the Percy Jackson stuff, but the trailer does look interesting and I'll count myself intrigued.

I love to find new books and share ideas with friends. I'm pretty active on the Amazon forums, so you might have seen me on there. If you want to see some of my Amazon reviews or lists of paranormal romance/urban fantasy recommendations, here's a link to my amazon profile:

I've done a list of about 40 paranormal romance/urban fantasy 'must reads' as well as lists of shapeshifter romances, romances focused on the Fae and humorous paranormal romance.

Meljean Brook is a good author. Her first two books in the series are more complex than a lot of PNRs, proably more like UF but w/the romance. I read the author saying that by her third book she tried to make them more mainstream PNR. I have the third and fourth books on pile TBR pile and heard good things about them.

Just joined recently and I am looking to discover some great reads from all of you. I am an avid paranormal romance reader. I prefer audiobooks and ebooks over print books. My favorite writers are Kim Harrison, J. R. Ward, Christine Feehan and Kelley Armstrong. I also just love the In Death series by J. D. Robb.

I'm Alaina. I love urban fantasy and read a whole heck of a lot of it! I'm hoping to get a line on new authors, since I've read a whole heck of a lot of what's out there (or at least it feels that way). I'm still in the process of updating my bookshelves, but eventually I'll get everything on there!
In addition to UF, I like to read m/m fiction, paranormal romance, Jane Austen fanfic (at least, that's what I call it, even though most of it is published through major booksellers) and mystery/suspense. I'm actually working on a PhD in English Literature, so genre fiction is my escape from super serious literature!
I'll be as active as I can, although I'm going through a serious obsession with m/m literature right now, so my UF reading has been coming in second. Maybe finding some new authors will change that!

Laurell K Hamilton started me on UF with her Anita Blake series, although I lost interest in it after Obsidian Butterfly. Ironically, it's my favorite in the series, but I didn't like where it went after that one. I also like Patricia Briggs, Kelly Armstrong, and Kim Harrison. I just finished Storm Front (the first of the Harry Dresden books), and I loved it. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
I can't wait to get know you guys and discuss this great genre. :)

I only really started reading last year how sad. But I love drowning myself in the young fantasy thats around but its only the start and Im getting there. Just joined good reads so I can open my horizons a little. I have just finished reading wicked lovely by melissa marr and I enjoyed it alot. and tomorrow im going to get out Moon Called from the library lol.
as you can tell, I'm not much of a typer nor can I be bothered. hehe maybe one day ill learn.
peace and love xx
and since we talk about ourselves lol I did not notice this until now...
I am a hairdresser, a mother of 1 (6) and a partner of a beautiful man who keeps me entertained lol

Joining because the bookshelf has been most helpful in finding various UF series.
UF is probably my favorite genre, scratch that, it is my favorite genre. Though only when done through the male POV. I may need to just read a few more series with female POVs, but they just focus on sex far too much.
Started out with UF reading Dresden - I've been obsessed since. :D

I live near Edmonton Alberta. I'll be sneaking up on 50 this year but feel about 20 years younger than that. I have two young children and quit my job in the chemical industry to become a SAHM a couple of years ago. I hadn't read anything but chemistry, management and parenting books for years so when I quit my job I had a bit of a back lash and read about 400 novels in the first 2 years...it was heaven I tell you.
I love urban fantasy, paranormal romance, fantasy, sci fi, contemporary romance, detective series, mysteries...I guess I have a bit of a book OCD problem.
Right now I'm reading a lot UF and a lot of investing/personal finance books. Trying to get on the road to wealth so I have more time and money for books LOL.
I am so happy to have found your group and will keep lurking around and enjoying the ambiance! :-)
Laura

Welcome! We currently have a thread going on about more action oriented UF (less sex). There's some great titles there you may want to check out. I like more action myself too.

My name's Alisha...I'm 27 and currently live in Austria with my husband, come from California (born and raised) by way of DC (lived there for the last 4 years). I love to read, but until early last year I sort of stopped reading fiction altogether ("no time" was my excuse). So now with a much reduced work schedule and living in a country where I speak about 50 words of the local language, I'm back to clearing a book or two (or three ^_^) a week.
I've always been a sucker for Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Mystery and stories with HEAs. ^_^ Growing up I would eat drink and breathe (mostly Greek and Roman) mythology...and my favorite series included Chronicles of Prydain, Encyclopedia Brown, Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys. Orson Scott Card and RL Stine were favorite authors in grade school.
These days, I'm more into Urban Fantasy (as opposed to the Epic Fantasy I liked so much as a child), Paranormal Romance, and Mystery "with a twist" (paranormal, forensic, etc.). I really see reading as my escapism, which is why I'm not very likely to read depressing material for enjoyment. Horror as part of something exciting and adventure-filled, yes...but horror as part of something extremely tragic (WWII fiction, I'm looking at you), not so much.
Really excited about getting to know you guys and chat UF!

I've been a fantasy/ S.F. Geek my whole life. Looking forward to getting to know you all and lots of great book recommendations!

I’d read anything in sight basically from the classics to the leaflets my mail box is being stuffed with daily.
I’ve been reading fantasy and scifi since childhood (Roald Dahl, Jules Verne, C.S. Lewis, and Lloyd Alexander were my favorites writers as a child) and lately got completely hooked on UF and PNR, well more like obsessed.
I’m 39y living it Tel Aviv (Israel). Having a new 1 month daughter (plus a 3 y boy) leave me with plenty of time to indulge in my obsession (:

Hi Vered, welcome to the group! Did you want me to add you to the Group Challenge for April-June?

I'm currently reading the Cassie Palmer series by Karen Chance and Dracula by Bram Stoker (I thought I should read the original, see where all the vampire hype started). I'm looking forward to all of the challenges and discussions!

Yes, thanks! I’ll post my list soon (:

LOL, another Lisa in CO. Maybe I'll put my initials in my name (if I can figure out how) so it's not confusing. :) Welcome to the group!
EDIT - Named changed :)

I love to read any kind of books, mostly Murder Mystery, but here lately I've been reading a lot of Paranormal.

Thanks!
Jon

About me...other than being book obsessed,I love sport, music, films, mythology, computer games, making scrapbooks, photography, collecting postcards(over 10000 in my collection now).I'm unemployed due to ill health which gives me time to feed my huge book compulsions!I have about 45 penpals from around the world and lots more friends online at my bookclubs.I spend spare time browsing charity shops which can be fatal...
Favourite authors include Charlaine Harris,Patricia Briggs,Laurell K Hamilton,Jennifer Rardin,Kelley Armstrong,Lynsay Sands. Also have about 60 other UF books and authors still waiting to be read which I will get round to eventually!

I'm 32, live in Ohio with 2 insane cats, and I haven't made it through my first pack of cigarette of the day yet. Oh, and I write. I'll do all the promo nonsense in the appropriate place, but I will say that I tell everyone my work is "Mythic Horror" and "Dark Modern Fantasy."
That said, everyone usually just gives me a strange look...
Besides "old school" loves like Clive Barker, Anne Rice and Brian Lumley, I've found a real dedication to a number of these Urban Fantasy authors. I really dig Tony Richards and Mike Carey. S.M. Peters rules my face off. I still haven't read my book by John Meaney, and I have books by both Jocelynn Drake and Charles Stross on the way.
I have relatively, um... particular opinions on the genre, how it's marketed and such, but I know I'm a minority there. Anyhow, I spend far too much time playing on the internet when I should be writing, so I wander around and poke at you guys elsewhere.
