I adore these authors and have read their books multiple times: Faith Hunter (Jane Yellowrock and Soulwood Series), the Alex Craft series by Kalayna Price and Shelly Laurenston who writes fun, snarky, urban fantasy .... and why she’s under romance...IDK. I have all of these in eBook and paper. They are Xmas gifts for my friends. They are strong and independent women with equally attractive romantic ties but so well done it’s not another gratuitous read.

And yea, I'm a superfan of Shelly Laurenston and her brand of chaotic hilarious absurdity!
I do believe that she is considered a romance author as the love story is central to most of her books. The Honey Badgers (which are IMO the best of her shifter world books) are far less 'lovey' though as the romance is secondary to everything else and the sibling relationship is the key. But as UF and PNR are just two ends of a sliding scale dependant on how much romance is in the book, it all comes down to individual perception with some series.

I'm Nick, I'm a speculative fiction writer with a release tomorrow in Urban Fantasy (which is why I'm belatedly scouring the internet for relevant groups as I finally raise my head above the parapet of my writing desk). I've read the guidelines so self-promotion will remain in the self-promotion thread.
Obviously, aside from writing, I love to read the genre, and speculative fiction in the broader sense, and I'm looking forward to finding some good recommendations here. Where urban fantsy is concerned, I'm into more adult, less romance-based themes, although I still find myself drawn into stories that don't adhere to that mold.

I got a practical job in a law firm (not a lawyer) and that's been me for the last 30 years, with SFF on the side. Kinda boring. But then I discovered beta reading. I can't write a thing, but I've found that I can help writers along the way, and I'm always impatient to get started on the next project. After all this time I've finally found a way to contribute to the SFF I love. I'm here to talk SFF/UF, but if anyone needs a paid beta reader focused on SFF (as opposed to SFF being at the bottom of a list of genre options starting with rom-com), check out my profile.

Hit me up if you want an opinion on something. I've got loads of them, although what qualifies me to have an opinion is something of a mystery. I'm a career firefighter in one of the largest departments in America, I've been a paramedic for a long time, and I've got some experience with hazardous materials. If you've got good books on disasters, either fictional or historic, I'm probably game. I'm thirsty for apocalyptic fiction of essentially any genre.
I'm also an author, but since I've got the salesmanship of a wet dog in a furniture store I'll just leave that for the curious.

Living in a lighthouse as a child led me early to a love of reading. Despite what you may have been told the life of a lighthouse keeper's son is not all Glamour and Parties. There's a lot of time when there really isn't much to do besides wonder if the fog horn has finally made you deaf or watch your dad pull fishing lures out of different parts of people bodies. (You'd be amazed!)
Two of my favorite houses growing up!

I read. I read a lot. We had a 'reading caterpillar' around the room at my school where every time you read a book you put your name on your color paper and hung it up. The teacher had to give me two colors because it was looking more like a worm than a caterpillar. I devoured CS Lewis before moving on to Tolkien. Reading has continued to be a big part of my life. I've moved into Alternative Realities by guys like Stirling and my guilty pleasure is Zombie novels. I can't seem to get enough of them! I basically read anything and everything!
Now I'm old with kids of my own who I am sad to say live in a regular house. There's 8 of us here though so it's a house full of love and laughter!
Enjoy the journey!
