Kitty Frost | 1 comments Hello everyone! My name's Kendra Frost, 21, and a native of Ohio. I am a writer as well as a reader. (Can't be the first without the second, now can we?)

I've got a couple of friends here already who recommended me to the site, and I'll just say that my favorite authors are Mercedes Lackey and associates, as well as quite a few UF authors, though I've mostly been reading for college lately, instead of fun.

Summer break is coming up in a week, though. Anyone have recommendations?

message 807: by Rinda (new)

Rinda Elliott | 6 comments Hi! I'm Rinda Elliott, also an author and reader. I'm thinking of starting a new-to-me UF series and saw this group. Looking forward to finding UF I haven't already read!

message 808: by Pam (new)

Pam Cooper | 1 comments Hello everyone. I am new to Goodreads and look forward to learning about new books and authors.

I live in Appalachia Ohio and live off grid. I spend a lot of my time reading when I am not working or outside.

I will pretty much read any book that looks remotely interesting. I am in a urban fantasy/paranormal phase right now. I have discovered a lot of new authors and books from BookBub but I am hoping to learn about more through Goodreads.

message 809: by Thomas (new)

Thomas Davidson | 1 comments Good day! My name is Tom, and I've joined primarily so I'll have a good way to get recommendations when I find myself faced with a wall of titles at the bookstore. So far, it's worked well :)

message 810: by Ellese (new)

Ellese (faithfulumbrella) | 1 comments Hello everyone! My name is Ellese and I love UF. I work at a bookstore where I get to be the expert on the occult (which is totally cool) and at a local high school.

I live in and claim Western North Carolina as my home, have a BA in Psychology, and played softball for a division one university. I also like to read other genres (though not always) which include mystery/thriller, nonfiction historical interpretation/general history, scientific papers, and whatever else I feel at the moment :)

I have a lot of favorite UF authors, including Patricia Briggs, Faith Hunter, Kat Richardson, C.E. Murphy - and so many more I cannot name them all. I have met Faith Hunter on a couple occasions and I must say she is AWESOME! You should read her books...umm, well if you have any questions feel free to ask and thank you for having a cool group!!

message 811: by Jalilah (new)

Jalilah Welcome Ellese!
Lucky you to have met Faith Hunter! Jane Yellowrock has become one of my favourite UF characters!

message 812: by Brandice (new)

Brandice Snowden | 1 comments Hello all. My name is Brandice and I am a voracious reader. I read everything from classical to fantasy/science fiction and everything in between. I am a wife and mother who lives in North Texas.

I'm new to Goodreads, but have heard it is an execellent place to discover new authors to read, which seems to be an ongoing problem from a gal who often finishes a book a day (sometimes more if I don't have to go into work that day). My personal library of actual books is sitting at about 3,000 after I culled nearly half of them. I think I may have single handedly stock our small town library's fantasy section when they held the book drive before opening.

I look forward to getting to know some new people as well as find some new literature to feed my addiction.

message 813: by Adam (new)

Adam Bolander | 25 comments Hey, all! My name's Adam. I've recently become addicted to the urban fantasy market. Patricia Briggs is probably my favorite UF author, and I'm also enjoying City of Bones. Hope I can get some more recommendations :D

message 814: by C (new)

C (cboggs) | 10 comments Hi Everyone. I'm Coleen. I'm a mom, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. And I work full time and I can't forget pet owner. In between all of the chaos of my life I make sure I find time to read. Reading is my ESCAPE and I'm sure a lot of you know what I mean. I mainly read urban fantasy, horror, suspense/thrillers, and romance to lighten up the load. Favorite authors are Laurell K. Hamilton; Patricia Briggs; Vicki Pettersson; Eileen Wilks; Jennifer Estepp; Rachel Vincent; J.D. Robb and so many more I can't begin to list them all.

I've been on Goodreads for a few months but this is my first group - can't wait to see what all everyone is reading!

E.R. (er_marrow) | 2 comments Hi, Everyone. My name is Ed. I write under the name E. R. Marrow. I live just outside Scranton PA with my wife, two kids, two dogs and two cats. (a Noah theme?).

Most of my reading life, I have been an Epic Fantasy geek (as well as computers, comics, Sci-Fi, gaming). One day I picked up the Dresden Files on a lark, and have been hooked since.

I read anything, but am currently enjoying the nice crop of indie UF authors.

message 817: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Garrett (heidi_g) I'm joining this group as an experiment:) I want to read more fantasy books! I also write, although I don't write urban fantasy, more fantasy fairy tale stuff. I just finished the BOTM, Urban Shaman. Still trying to wrap my head around it:)

message 821: by Sue (new)

Sue | 28 comments Hello, my name is Sue and I've been a long time reader but am now reading new-to-me genres these past few months. In the past I had, and still do, read a lot of historical fiction as well as non-fiction science/nature books. Last summer I branched out and read the 50 shades trilogy which led me to Drop Box which led me to a friend's friend's list of books... Well, from there I read The Hunger Games, then Divergent and Insurgent. And then I discovered Elizabeth Hunter and her Elemental Mysteries. And then on to Deborah Harkness and then onto all sorts of adventures. I recently finished Kiss of Steel and Heart of Iron which has brought me here! Really liked her stuff and am looking for more like that. When I'm not reading I'm hanging out in my garden, running or enjoying my family of two legged and four legged critters. I rarely watch TV, I like the quiet and community supported radio if I want to listen to something. Love my Kindle Fire and iPad, use them both interchangeably. Thanks for creating this group :).

message 822: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Llamrei (lisallamrei) Hello,

My name is Lisa Llamrei and I live near Toronto, Canada with my four daughters. I'm a writer and have recently published my first novel.

I'm also a voracious reader of most genres. Looking forward to joining in the discussions.

D.S. England (DsEngland) D.S. England (DsEngland) | 2 comments Hi there,

My fiance recommended this group to me as I've just released my debut book (don't worry this isn't a self promotion attempt) so I can finally begin to catch up on the books I've missed whilst I was working on my own.

I've looked through a few topics and really like the look of the group and the recommendations/discussions so... here I am!

I'll read just about anything that isn't romance, not just because I don't like the genre but I've also just become a father so my romantic life has died at the moment and been replaced by dirty nappies and three a.m feeds!

Looking forward to catching up on good books with you all

All the best,

Dave

message 824: by David (new)

David Oh man, I never introduced myself. Hi. I am David. I am a huge fan of literacy in general. I like Urban Fantasy and Golden Age fantasy/pulp. Ray Bradbury is my favorite fiction author. Mr. Jim Butcher comes in a close second.

I joined the group so that I can actually have people to talk to about all the stuff I read. I also wanted to have a community that could help me find some good books in the genre.

message 825: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie | 1 comments Hey-O,
My name is Stephanie and I a thing for reading books, as I think everyone here has this in common. I recently have moved to enjoying Urban Fantasy books more than any other genre. I use to be really in historical romances, but I really got fed up with all the females leads have little to no agency. It all started with Kate Daniels series and I couldn't get enough of the creatures, and the kicka** characters (especially strong leading females) Also the worlds the authors would create to place these characters and creature together is a main enjoyment for me. I am looking forward to coming across new books listed here by others that have some of the same interests as me.

James (jameslwilber) | 13 comments Hello Everyone,

I'm James L. Wilber, author and fan of urban fantasy. I'm always on the look out for good independent writers with a unique voice.

message 827: by Robert (new)

Robert Poulin | 4 comments Hi Everyone! My name is Robert Poulin and I'm an Urban Fantasy junkie. I'm about to turn 44 and I'm the Executive Director of a disability rights and advocacy nonprofit in upstate New York. I have been legally blind since I was little, most of my reading is done through Audible though my IPad has been getting a lot of use lately.

My favorites are Dresden Files, Rachel Morgan Series, Mercy Thompson, Kate Daniels, and the Iron Druid Chronicles. Other series that have caught my attention of late are; The Sing of the Zodiac, Monster Hunter International, and the Black Sun's Daughters. I am currently reading A Caress of Twilight by Laurell K Hamilton. I first fell in love with Urban Fantasy reading the Anita Blake series.

My other addiction at the moment is watching the Sons of Anarchy. I'm not a big fan of prison or motorcycly/outlaw shows but the storytelling in SoA is amazing. I gave it a try as research for a character that I was developing for my second novel Death Toll. Its really cool how research can lead you to such gems as SoA. I highly recommend this show.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone and getting on with some good UF reading.

message 830: by Raya (new)

Raya (rayaha) Hi, I just found the good reads website and I love it. I am a book lover. I read 3 to 5 books a week (depending on the length of the books). My husband laughs because I am always afraid I am going to run out of good books to read...then I find a website like this and I realize that no matter how fast I read there will always be more great stories out there.
I am a wife and mother of 2 great kids. I am proud to say my 7 year old girl loves books as much as I do and I consider it a part time job to keep her in good books to read.
I love Urban Fantasy. Patricia Briggs and Jim Butcher are 2 of my all time favorite authors but there are so many good authors out there!
I am just happy to see that there are so many people out there that enjoy this genre as much as I do.

message 836: by Snarktastic Sonja (new)

Snarktastic Sonja (snownsew) | 18 comments Hi. I'm Sonja. I have long been a Fantasy addict who has avidly avoided vampires and werewolves. Patricia Briggs single handedly converted me. I still hate vampires - but shifters intrigue me.

My favorites include Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews, Mia Marshall and Lisa Shearin (though I really don't classify her as UF, others do.)

message 837: by Amber (new)

Amber (unchangeling) | 23 comments Greetings all. Hopping group you got here.

I'm an artist/author trying to make my living from both—no easy thing!—who grew up reading SF.

Many of my favorite stories are set in the real world but where it has or experiences some kind of what-if twist—that's what I like about UF (though personally I can pass on the ones that are romance novels in a PN/SN urban setting). I find the fantastic more interesting and wondrous when somehow set in contrast with and related to the real world.

message 838: by Brainycat (new)

Brainycat | 4 comments Hello everybody! Lately, I've been reading a lot of noir UF: most recently the Felix Castor series, I'm also a huge fan of The Laundry Codex series and of course Sandman Slim.

Historically, I've always read a lot of scifi (especially cyberpunk) and horror (the more gruesome the better). I don't like YA fiction; I like to read stories with explicit sex and violence.

I'm hoping to be able to find more books in a specific niche: I like contemporary, noir UF whodunnits, especially within the abrahamaic mythos. I'm especially interested in books that feature Lucifer and his buddies as the antiheroes.

I'm not a big fan of the Paranormal Romance genre; I've tried to read several popular books but I haven't found any that hold my interest for very long.

Thanks, and I look forward to some great discussions!

message 839: by Amber (new)

Amber (unchangeling) | 23 comments Brainycat, check out Mercury Rising (and the other book in the series) by Robert Kroese, and Mark Ferrari's The Book of Joby.

I just finished book #3 in the Spinoza series The Vampire in the Iron Mask (Spinoza Series #3) by J.R. Rain and it definitely has that noir, hard-boiled detective feel. The books are *very* short (In fact, all three books would probably equal a regular length book), but I enjoyed it quite a bit.

message 841: by Julia (new)

Julia | 615 comments Brainycat could you clarify, please: I like contemporary, noir UF whodunnits, especially within the abrahamaic mythos. I'm especially interested in books that feature Lucifer and his buddies as the antiheroes.

So... not novels, or stories based on Norse legends, or Native ones, or Hindu ones to name a few...

It's not Lucifer, but a former colleague of his who heads up the A Kiss Before the Apocalypse by Thomas E. Sniegoski A Kiss Before the Apocalypse (Remy Chandler, #1) by Thomas E. Sniegoski .

message 842: by Ambisaurus (new)

Ambisaurus Rex (ambisaur) Hi,
I'm Amber a 22 stay art home mom of one and Navy wife. I love paranormal romance and urban fantasy and am on currently on what might be a lifelong search for characters as awesome as Giguhl from the Sabina Kane series and Jenks from the Hollows series. So far no luck but I refuse to give up. I don't read the books for sex but I do love when it's written well and in a way that isn't awkward. Not sure what else to say right now though I'm kind of drawing a blank.

thalassic Hi everyone, I'm Liz. I'm 43 and I've loved books all my life but usually not the ones that anybody else I know reads. Lately I've been reading a lot of urban fantasy since it combines two (at least) of my favorite genres; mystery and fantasy. I tend to prefer the darker, more noir-ish/dark fantasy ones.
