I just finished Magic Bleeds in the Kate Daniels series. Taking a break to read The Graveyard Book (Neil Gaiman) for a little variation, and then on to Magic Slays. I also have Gun Metal Magic on audio book, so I am set up fairly nice. :)

I also like the Kate Daniels series. Kate and Curran are finally making progress in book 4, but we will see. He is not good enough for her. #jealousofthebeastlord

Geoffrey Wakeling | 23 comments Hi everyone, it's nice to see such an active group! :D

I'm Geoff from London, and love nothing more than to hide away with a good novel or movie to escape the city bustle. I work from home (I'm a landscape gardener and author), and almost always have a cat on my lap....with possible drool, eurgh, as well!

I love the escapism that a good UF,SF or Paranormal book brings, and I find the same with movies and good TV shows (True Blood, Supernatural, Walking Dead etc).

Looking forward to getting to know people here,

Geoff

Danielle Book Boss (daniellebookboss) Hi everyone,

My name is Danielle and I pretty much only read PNR and now UF. Sometimes I'll take it old school and read a historical but that's not too often. Looking forward to interactions!

PS Feel free to add me as a friend!

D.

Marian Weaver (crazyjane) Hi, all ... I'm Maz, and live all the way down the bottom of the world in Melbourne, Australia. I'm not currently working full-time, although I get the occasional editing or writing job, and I blog for love (not money, alas). I am that most pitiable of literary creatures, a poet who actually believes that one day publishers will start printing us again. :)

My reading preferences are skewed heavily towards science fiction, urban fantasy, crime (more the Kathy Reichs style than Harry Connolly), horror and steampunk - though I'm completely over vampires. Over. Done. Outta here.

That said, I'm always open to new recommendations - I never know when I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Favourite authors include Stephen King, Jim Butcher, Gail Carriger, Lilith Saintcrow (the Jill Kismet series - whatta woman!), Kim Stanley Robinson and Sara Douglass. This is, of course, subject to change without notice.

Brendan (brendanchandler) | 3 comments Hello all, I'm Brendan. Have been reading sci-fi, fantasy and fiction since i was very little and I consider myself a pretty avid reader. Recently I have been coming back to urban fiction because a couple very enjoyable series (Dresden Files and Iron Druid Chronicles).

I came here hoping for some good suggestions for other good series. I should probably mention that while i don't mind romance, I prefer it not be the point of the story. Also, vampires are supposed to be monsters, not sparkly boyfriend material in my opinion. Looking forward to suggestions/discussions! Thanks!

message 718: by J.P. (new)

J.P. McLean (jpmclean) Hi. My name is Jo-Anne. I live on a small Gulf Island between Vancouver Island and Mainland British Columbia. I’ve enjoyed the fantasy genre since kindergarten when our class went to see the high school’s production of Peter Pan. In later years I remember being completely captivated by John Wyndham's novel, The Chrysalids. It was probably the first required reading for school that I actually enjoyed (Shakespeare seemed too much work back then).

My reading interests include classic literature to contemporary comedy and everything in between, but my favourite is fantasy. I joined Goodreads in May and this Urban Fantasy Group in August. I’ve enjoyed the group’s discussions and must thank you for introducing me to Patricia Briggs and Jim Butcher through your book of the month suggestions. Also, thanks to this group, I learned of a genre I didn’t even know existed: Steampunk. I look forward to many more discoveries. Thanks for having me.

Eloise Kindred | 7 comments Hi, my name's Eloise. I'm 27 from Leicester, England. I'm a fan of urban fantasy novels - Anita Blake, Kitty Norville, Sookie Stackhouse and the Women of the Otherworld all live on my bookshelf! I've also got loads more I've not even had a chance to start reading yet, but I'll be commenting on them when I do!
As well as reading, I also enjoy writing. I'm currently working on an urban fantasy series about witches in Salem. More on that at a later date!
Looking forward to talking 2 u all
EloiseK xx

message 721: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (lovesrotties) | 4 comments Hello, my name is Jen. Fantasy is my favorite genre of books to read, usually the elves in the woods with dragons type. My favorite trilogy is the Outstretched Shadow by Mercedes Lackey. But I've read some of the urban fantasy as well, and some seem pretty good, and some really seem more of the romantic fantasy type, which I am generally not interested in. I'm hoping this group will help guide me through the waters and expand my reading some.

message 722: by Yasaman (new)

Yasaman Noori (yasaman_noori) | 2 comments Hi, I'm Yasmine (same as Jasmine). I'm 26. I love Urban Fantasy. Some of the books I've read so far are; The Night Huntress Series, Fever Series, Anita Blake Vampire Hunter, Merry Gentry Series, Hollows, Kate Daniels Series... . I've read a lot more. But these are the kinds of book I'm more into. I'm reading Burn the Night right now, and looking for a cool new series to start. I also like paranormal romance. J.R. Ward's BDB is my favorite in the genre. Hope to get some good help as what to read next. Nice to see all of you guys!

Jaclyn | 2 comments Hello, everybody! I'm Jaclyn, 30 year old mother of one boy living in Texas. I love reading about things that would not happen in my every day life. My favorite genres are Urban Fantasy and Paranormal. My in-love-with series right now is The Hollows. I look forward to discussing books with you all. :)

Sammy | 1 comments Hi guys, I'm Sammy. I'm 21 years old, a full-time university student and book lover! I find that a lot of the time I'm reading books instead of revising for exams or doing my assignments but I just really can't help it. I love books simply because they require imagination, and having a good imagination is the perfect way to achieve an open-mind :)

I'm Jeff, 43, married, and living in Rhode Island. I teach philosophy and have published in some of the Pop Culture and Philosophy series -- Dune and Philosophy, The Big Lebowski and Philosophy, Ender's Game and Philosophy, and Dungeons and Dragons and Philosophy. Aside from reading and writing, I like to cook, sing karaoke, and play DnD. I also love going to movies.

I read fantasy, sci-fi, urban fantasy/paranormal romance, and other fiction.

message 730: by Adrian Faulkner (new)

Adrian Faulkner | 2 comments Hi,

I'm Adrian. I'm 40 years old and live about 30 miles outside of London close to where the tripods first landed in War of the Worlds, near where Lewis Carroll used to go walking and not that far from Watership Down. I write Urban Fantasy but that's not why I'm here as I'm a big reader of the genre and have a reading interest in discovering new series.

I vowed to myself that 2013 would be a year for reading purely for pleasure and have been working my way through The Dresden Files which I've never had chance to more than sample. Love them and just finished book 4. Also recently started on the Iron Druid series which I recommend. Hope to find lots of reading recommendations here

Gunnhildur Rúnarsdóttir (grafarholt) | 1 comments Hello everyone,

I'm Gunnhildur. I love reading and I always used to read a lot. Up until a few months ago I had mostly just been rereading my favorite old books over and over again. Then I discovered Goodreads through Felicia Day and her Vaginal Fantasy Hangout group. It opened up a whole new world of reading for me.

I just discovered this group and I plan to read this months book.

message 732: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Stultz (wicketwillowbean) | 1 comments My name is Elizabeth and I'm 24 years old. I live in Kentucky (Louisville, to be precise). I have a BA in psychology and did two minors in English with a concentration in literature and Medieval Studies. I studied French for 5 years and have experience with Japanese, German, and Latin. One of my dreams is to translate Medieval Latin and French manuscripts. The other is to eventually become an archaeologist.

Currently, I work with toddlers as a teacher in a daycare. It's not exactly my dream job, or the best use of my degree, but it works for now. I am going back to school in August to work towards a degree in education so that I can become a third grade teacher. I also plan on doing another major in either microbiology or anthropology. I do enjoy some aspects of my job such as being able to teach my children and the joy that I receive when they finally catch on to what I've taught them. I also enjoy the smiles, hugs, and kisses that I get from my kids when I come to work in the mornings.

I am an avid reader and have been since I was a child. I generally read anything except westerns, romance, and inspirational/Christian books. I quite enjoy horror, fantasy, historical fiction, and mysteries. I have also gotten into the Quirk classics recently. Right now, I am reading Android Karenina. Classic literature is another favorite of mine with Edgar Allan Poe, Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, HP Lovecraft, Victor Hugo, and Gaston LeRoux being among my favorites.

I look forward to making new friends and taking part in book discussions.

-Elizabeth

Floh Hi my name is Florian. I am 31 years old, married without Kids and live in Germany. I am addicted to reading since my teens. Mostly Fantasy (High/ Dark/Urban/erotic/whatever), light Science Fiction, as well as, nonfiction books. While I started reading German books, I now read English books most of the time, especially since I got a Kindle. A couple of years ago, I discovered audio books which allowed me to dive into fantasy worlds, while I am on the road.

Other than reading I love scuba diving, backpacking or riding motorcycle together with my wife and our friends.

message 734: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Shields (wealdfaejournals) Hi, I'm Christopher Shields. I write contemporary young adult fantasy, and enjoy reading it and a wide variety of fantasy, thrillers, and some horror. I'm a professor of criminal justice at the University of Arkansas, and love writing at night. Weekends are a great time for me to unwind and play sax with a group of friends who jam to old blues and folk. I look forward to keeping up with what folks are reading, and would love to share my work as well. Thanks for having me.

Neil Benson | 4 comments Hi, my name is Neil. My partner and I live in northern Georgia, about 30 miles north of Atlanta. I used to work as a psychologist among other things in a different life. I've been reading science fiction and fantasy for more decades than I care to count. I've always been interested in the vampires and the paranormal. I have read novels by many of the famous writers of science fiction, fantasy, and horror.

I started writing short stories over a decade ago, and through a series of inexplicable circumstances ended up writing a vampire novel. I did get it published, but learned many things of which I had not been aware. I became good friends with a former Special Forces soldier and wondered if I could combine fantasy with the harshest reality. I recently completed a draft of a novella about a 26-year-old female wizard who works for The Department of Homeland Security fighting terrorists and terrorist wizards. She is partnered with a former Special Forces officer to form a "Ghost Team" because of her ability to create the shield that renders them invisible to the human eye and even radar. I am actively seeking other fantasy/paranormal writers to get a critique on my novella, and I would of course provide a critique of their novella or novel. Please contact me if you're interested.

Joseph Nassise Hi all, I'm Joe Nassise and I live in Arizona. I make my living as an urban fantasy writer and read others in the genre voraciously. Favorite writers/series include Lilith St.Crow (Jill Kismet), Marjorie Liu (Hunter Kiss), Caitlin Kittredge (Black London), Richard Kadrey (Sandman Slim), Jim Butcher (Dresden), Kevin Hearne (Iron Druid), Ian Tregillis (Milkweed Tryptych), and plenty more. Looking forward to hanging around and talking UF.

I see you are a fan of Sandman Slim. Interested in your thoughts as to the direction it's now going in.

message 739: by Joseph (new)

Joseph Nassise LM - I was not as thrilled with the last two books (Aloha from Hell and Devil Said Bang) as I was with the first two. I prefer Stark's adventures here on the earthly plane, I guess, and hope Kadrey gets back to that with Kill City Blues.

message 740: by Alan (new)

Alan Dean (raincoastfiction) Hi, I'm an eclectic reader where richness of plot, character and prose is more important than genre. Probably the most influencial authors are Tolkien, Garcia Marquez, C. S. Lewis, Tolstoy and a myriad of other writers who have lept off the shelf after browsing a few random paragraphs. The happy unexpected find is all a part of reading. I perhaps would never have thought that The Mists of Avalon would be a book worth taking to a desert island, but it's high on the all time list. I guess most of all I'd like to write prose like Marquez and verse like Shakespeare, or at least a line or two once in my lifetime :)

message 741: by Della (new)

Della | 1 comments Howdy y'all! I'm Della. I've been writing urban fantasy for a while without really knowing it, and then I found Jim Butcher and it was like: oh shit, this is my genre! Awesome stuff.

Unfortunately I haven't really found any other good urban fantasy authors, though a friend is pushing me toward the Felix Castor series, so I'm hoping this group can get me into some new books!

message 742: by Dan (new)

Dan Guajars (guajars) | 5 comments I'm urban fantasy writer from Chile. I'm into audio books, mostly. Have no time to read a real book. And I'm still learning how to write in english, so corrections are welcome. Greetings!

Dusty Bibliophile Howdy all. Currently living in the Chesapeake Bay area of the eastern US, I spent some formative years in northeast Texas and central Arizona. I've read and enjoy reading books from many different genres: fiction, steampunk, sci-fi, fantasy, non-fiction, and some YA are areas I seem to hang around the most. I'm not very fond of westerns (Lonesome Dove can take it's Pulitzer and go very far away) or romance (I like the interactions that are there in romance but I don't need the erotic descriptions).

Books that hit my "To Keep" shelf include The Book Thief, Divergent, and Horns of Ruin.

Danelle Tavares (plasmadoll) | 4 comments Greetings All...I recently joined, and though t I should get this intro out of the way :)

I currently live in Phoenix, AZ and was lucky enough to find the perfect geeky gamer husband! I read a lot, but only in the past couple years have I gotten into fantasy, and only since the last year have I started reading Urban Fantasy. I worked in the book industry for several years, and love to read anything and everything! I was some what of a book snob when I was younger, but now that I have matured (such a nice way of saying gotten old! lol) I have really grown to have an appreciation for escapism books :D I look forward to being a part of the group :) Have a great day!

Favourite authors are Cory Doctorow, Haruki Murakami and Margaret Atwood. Looking forward to some good recommendations and getting involved in some interesting discussions. ;)

message 750: by Jalilah (new)

Jalilah Welcome everyone!
Laura, Magical Realism will always remain my #1 love.
I also love Haruki Murakami. Have you read Charles de Lint? He is old school Urban Fantasy, but many of his works are borderline Magical Realism.
