Welcome to the group, Scott! I started out reading traditional fantasy and only relatively recently (last 2 years) discovered urban fantasy. You're right - it definitely is a breath of fresh air.

Susie M. Hanley | 5 comments Hello everyone!

My name is Susie, I am 28 and I LOVE Urban Fantasy. I am an avid reader and have around 30 series that I follow in the genre and a few I keep an eye on in the off chance I have nothing better to read lol.

I also read plenty of other kinds of books, from regular fiction to medium (as opposed to high) fantasy. Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones is about as much as I can take in true fantasy. It also seems that SteamPunk is growing on me so I may be reading more of that.

A little more about me: I have been happily married for over 11 years to a giant (I mean huge as in 6 foot 4 inches tall and 300 pounds) IT nerd. I also have two kids. A beautiful little girl or rather pre-teen who is nearly 12 and a middle schooler this year (heaven help me!) and a son, age 9, who is too smart for his own good and suffers severely from AD/HD and OCD. Needless to say my little family keeps be hoppin', but I always find a good escape into some amazing books.

This year has been exciting for me. In June I finished my Bachelor's degree in Communication and Cultures and then after almost 4 years of work, I launched my debut Urban Fantasy Novel, MUSE. (Don't worry, I promise to be as active in this group as I can and not do "too much" self-promoting.

Launching my book has been exciting and I am happy to answer any questions you may have about it or about writing and publishing. I am always looking for people willing to receive a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

All that being said, I am excited to be a part of this group. I probably would have joined a lot sooner, but between school and the book, and family, I didn't have much time for anything else. Things have calmed down though now and I have much more time to pursue my passions. I look forward to getting to know you all, connecting with those passionate about the same things I am and adding some new amazing books to my "read" list.

Thanks!!

David Barnett | 2 comments Hi there. Joined the group because I'm a huge fan of Jim Butcher and Simon R. Green (Nightside and Shaman Bond series). Always looking for new series to check out when I get time for personal reading. I'm also the owner of Necro Publications and Bedlam Press around since 1993. While Necro focuses on harder modern dark fiction, Bedlam is open to a broader field, one being urban fantasy. We just put out A HOST OF THE ARMAGEDDON by Ken Scott Smith. Don't want to spam up my first post with links. I'll try and be more active in the group before promoting things.

Looking forward to seeing other recommendations. Thanks for adding me.

Later

Lorelle (lozza2407) | 52 comments Howdy All

Im Lorelle, and I'm from Brisbane , Australia. I have only recently progressed to "big girl" adult paranormal and urban fantasy from YA ( Mortal Instruments etc ). It was only from finding goodreads that I realised I could find so many other books that would interest me, for my age group!! ( Im 37) . So now I have like 300 books on my to read list, and I average about 1 book every 2 days , and started my reading obsession about 4 months ago. My favourite series to date are Kate Daniels, On the Edge, Charley Davidson, Mercedes Thompson and Women of the Otherworld ( up to 6), oh and Anita Blake ( I know..but Im only up to 5..). Other series that Ive started but that are taking more of a backseat are , The Hollows, Fever, Dark Swan, Immortals After Dark, BDB, Georgina Kincaid and probably about 10 others lol.

Id love to follow more people and feel free to follow my reviews!
Im definately more of a shapeshifter kind of girl more than Vampire!

Happy Reading!

Lorelle, I love Mercedes Thompson,Georgia Kincaid, and BDB, too. This group is a *great* way to get introduced to more authors/books. You sound like you might enjoy our monthly reading challenge, lol.

Good to meet you here.

Welcome, Lorelle. This list will keep your reading list well stocked, I'm sure. With your likes, you may want to try Faith Hunter's "Jane Yellowrock" series. That was one of my first discoveries through GR that is now on my 'must buy' list.

I have to admit I'm not a big fan of either vampires or weres in general but Faith Hunter manages both in a way that I find entertaining. A plus for me, of course, is that Jane is a skinwalker rather than a were and that makes a big difference in how she is presented.

That reminds me of Mercy Thompson. Isn't she a skinwalker, too? I don't mind weres and vamps if they are mixed with other types of supernatural critters.

I don't think so. I quit reading after 3 or 4 books into the series she may have 'turned'. I know she was involved with the werewolf pack but can't remember if she was a werewolf herself when I was reading or not (don't think so) but it was werewolf, not skinwalker.

Patrick LeClerc (patrickleclerc) | 16 comments Hello all.

I am a newly published author and a Paramedic in the Greater Boston area. Before that, I joined the Marines, earned a degree that I've never used, and bounced around from job to job, honing an impressive talent for making career limiting observations.

Having finally found my niche in the eye of the storm of disease and trauma, I am beginning to resemble a contributing member of society, blessed with a happy marriage, and a young son who has the roguish grin of Errol Flynn, the build of a linebacker, a frighteningly well developed sense of humor, and as much energy as a gram of chocolate frosted crack.

I'm also staring down the barrels of middle age and a mortgage, so I'm pretty much living the American Dream.

I have always been a voracious reader and prolific writer, having two completed novels, most of a third, and a dozen short stories to my name. I have served as one of the founding editors of the speculative fiction zine Quantum Muse, and brought the concept mismanagement to new heights.

What I am shockingly bad at is promotion. I am more at home talking to gang members in the projects than writing query letters, and I'd rather carry a three hundred pound man in congestive heart failure down from a three decker than write a synopsis. This has not gotten me very far in my writing career.

I hope to get some useful feedback, hone my skills, and come to some understanding of the industry through this community. I hope it can be another band of misfits with whom I can find my place.

Failing that, I'm sure my keen ability to wear out my welcome will stand me in good stead.

Here is a gentle reminder from me (the moderator):

The 'introduce yourself' forum is a way for new members of the Urban Fantasy group to get to know one another. It is not a way for writers to slip in book promo. If you are a writer, please use the 'self promotion' thread to discuss your work.

Ideally, the 'introduce yourself' thread is a place to tell about your reading habits, favorite titles and authors, and maybe where you hail from and what hobbies you enjoy.

Thank you.

message 673: by Patrick (new)

Patrick LeClerc (patrickleclerc) | 16 comments Sorry.

message 680: by Toi (new)

Toi Thomas (toithomas) Hi there, Toi here. It's just a nickname, but I like it an it is simple. It’s what I use all the time, even when I write. I'm in my early 30s, am married, have no children, and am kinda of a big kid. I have a degree in computers and left the chaos of corporate America to become a teacher's assistant, so it should be pretty obvious that I'm not into material things, given the pay cut I took.

Aside from all my other hobbies and interest, including baking from scratch and painting, I started writing books to keep my mind active. To date, urban fantasy has been my best fit. So back to me being a big kid...I love comic books, all kinds of movies, I collect action figures, and childhood memorabilia. My husband and I stroll the aisles of toy stores when we need something to brighten our day. I couldn't get through a year without my membership to the Zoo and Nexflix and Hulu keep me connected to the world of entertainment outside of books.

In terms of books, I'll read almost anything, though I can't seem to stomach erotica and gory horror. It's just not for me. I have nothing again real intense romance and don't mind being scared from time to time, but fantasy is best for me. I also like to read traditional contemporary fiction, classics, sci-fi, and sometimes historical fiction and romance, leaning mostly towards the paranormal type, but not exclusively.

Lately I have taken an interest in non-fiction in terms of biographies, especial biographies about writers; they have the best life stories. I joined this group because it seemed like a good way to read and chat about books in a genre I actually like, sense none of my friends are will to step away from what I call "Lifetime Novels" long enough to see if they might like something else. I like fantasy, but I will and have tried other stuff.

I hope I'm able to find a place for me in this group and make some new friends.

Gaelle Cathy (gaellecathy) | 18 comments Hi everyone!! I'm new to the group. I've been on Goodreads for about a year but never paid attention about the group function, and so to all the great groups there were here. I must admit I am more a Tv show person than a book person, and urban fantasy started with Buffy for me. I am from that generation. I love everything vampires/witchcraft/werewolves however the first book I published a year ago is a mystery/romance, nothing fantasy in it. But at the same time I wrote this novel, I also wrote a big, epic urban fantasy named legacy, under another author's name (GC Lehane). Apart from that, well, I've worked as a postwoman for three years, then worked for ten years in a museum in a big city here in France. Moved out to the country last year, worked 8 months in a hotel/restaurant, been unemployed the next eight months and now I'm preparing a diploma to be a confectioner. Hope everyone is well! Thanks for welcoming me here.

Matthew Bryant (mattbryantdfw) Hey guys! My name's Matt and I live in Texas with my wife and three young daughters. I've lived all over Texas and been here my whole life.

I've been huge into books since I was in kindergarten, and thrilled that my second grader shares the same love (she reads through Judy Moody books in a day or two!) I was really into high fantasy when I was a kid, then later grew up to love horror, thrillers and the occasional comedy.

I've worked all over the place... from customer service, tech support, warehouse management, 3D animation until most recently, an English teacher at a juvenile detention center. Currently, I'm a stay at home dad to look after my one and three year old, the latter having been diagnosed with autism.

I spend my evenings either tutoring Math/English to kids of all ages or writing. I was recently published (Not selling! Just saying!) ;) And have lately been engrossed in the Cirque Du Freak series by Darren Shan.

And my coolest feature? Yup.. I can quote Goodnight Moon by heart (and do so at least a dozen times a day)

~Thena~ (athena-nadine) | 13 comments Hi everyone!

My name is Athena and I just joined this group a few minutes ago. I read just about all types of fantasy--epic fantasy, UF, PNR, YA. I like just about all of it, but I'm having a hard time getting into most dystopia (sorry! lol)

I grew up in NYC but live in CO now. I am married to an amazingly patient, tolerant man, and have two children--a 6 year old boy and a 5 year old girl. I will be...GASP!...40 on my birthday in January. I am currently home with my children, but will be renewing my real estate license once my daughter is in kindergarten next year. I miss working but it's important to me to be around when my kids get home from school.

Um...what else? I love to ski, bake, and cook. I can knit but only knit baby blankets because they're fun. I read obsessively and my formal living room is really a library. :)

Peter King (piwakawaka) | 4 comments Kia Ora, I'm a new member from New Zealand. I see urban fantasy as a kind of magical realism. The best reflects on reality but distorts it through the lens of urban fantasy in interesting and different ways. I could see the point to Twilight but all the vampire and zombie stuff since I find unimaginative. I loved the original Dracula which I consider one of the most important first ever modernist books. I'm currently reading The Lies of Locke Lamoraand feeling very intimidated as a writer.
My own work Serendipityis what happens when you mix global news-behind-the news with urban fantasy. I wanted to do a story which weaves a story around some of the most fantastic real things happening on our planet as they happen. Books two and three will be out over the next few months.

Welcome!
Yes, there are similarities between Magical Realism and Urban Fantasy, in particular the more Mythic type like Charles de Lint.

There are differences too, the main one for me being Magical Realism novels rarely if ever come in series and also Urban Fantasy is a lot more violent.

message 700: by Travis (new)

Travis Luedke (twluedke) Travis Luedke

Hello everybody. I'm new to the group. I have enjoyed many a genre, starting with horror, sci-fi, and fantasy in my teen years. Now I read primarily Urban Fantasy and PNR.

I realized a couple years ago that I wanted to write novels patterned after some of my favorites, Sunny, Laurell K. Hamilton, JR Ward, and Dean Koontz. I have been writing ever since.

This year I decided to publish Indie, and have not looked back.

I am very active here on Goodreads, facebook, and twitter. I am working my way up into the lists here as well.

I would really like to hear about newly released ADULT Urban Fantasy that's hot and unique.

My writing style is Urban Fantasy Thriller with an edge of romance/erotica. It is graphically violent and sexual--VERY MUCH ADULT ENTERTAINMENT.

My first novel in the series is currently FREE everywhere, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple, Kobo, Smashwords. I had hoped to get a sense, a confirmation that my writing can command an audience.

Thus far I have 4.6 stars on 35 Reviews on Amazon.

The Nightlife New York

I just published the second novel. Its available on Amazon exclusively via KDP select, free to prime members.

The Nightlife: Las Vegas

I would like to connect with readers, learn about new hot novels in this genre, catch some free reads, and maybe find a couple more beta readers and critiques for current works in progress.

Nice to meet everyone.

Travis
