Urban Fantasy discussion
The Sookie Stackhouse series was the first Urban Fantasy I read. I devoured all the Sookie books straight through to Dead and Gone. I could not get enough and was disappointed that there were no more books at the time. In the meantime I went on to discover other authors. When Dead in the Family came out, it had been over a year since I'd read the series and I did not like it that much anymore. I think it is a wonderful, kooky series but a little trashy. I always feel a little like I've eaten juck food when I read it.In my opinion it's gone on way too long. It should have ended after book 6.

I have to admit I have taken a break from the series, but not because I am bored of them or dislike them. I own the first 10 books so I figured I would borrow from the library and read some other books for a while.
Back to Sookie...I love the series,I love Sookie and I love Eric for some odd reason. I love that the books are not all romance that their is a little action and death in them. I also don't find the few sex scene bothersome at all and I have never read a romance novel in my life, but sex doesn't bother me so I'm fine with what the book offers. I can't wait to start the series up again, but after joining a few groups on here my TBR list has grown.
I really enjoyed book 4 so let me know what you think.
I love Sookie! I think I've read four or five of hers. I'm a big fan of the TV show, too!
I love her too. You know I have not seen the TV show yet. I wanted to read all the books first. But do you think it makes a difference? I want to watch the show really badly.
The TV show is so different from the books that I don't think it makes a difference. If I remember correctly, the first season covers books 1 & 2 only (*if* I remember correctly, lol.) I had only read up to book four before I started watching the show, and I don't think I got any real surprises until the latest season.
The TV show moves way differently than the books and has a lot more story threads. It follows the same general path of the books, but there are a lot of changes and add ons.
And those vampires on the show? Majorly hot. Majorly. ;)
Hiya! I'm Jessica and I work as the circulation manager at a library in North Carolina. I'm addicted to paranormal/fantasy books. My library patrons know me as the paranormal librarian. I am about to start my first year of grad school for library science which I'm stoked/nauseated by.
Hi, Jessica! I wish *my* library had a PNR/UF librarian, lol! I think we have a scifi librarian, though, since the shelves are full of it. Not *quite* as good as having a PNR/UF librarian, but not bad either.
Welcome to the group! :)
Hi everyone! I'm Charles, author of Firecracker, and I'm a fan of Urban Fantasy novels. Not "vampire novels" necessarily, but magic and the paranormal / supernatural in modern day settings. My favorites are The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher ... but now that I'm all caught up on those, I'm not sure what to read next. I'll be looking for some suggestions from you all, and look forward to sharing my Urban Fantasy experiences with you. Thanks for having me!- Charles
Hey I'm Rachael, I'm a stay at home mum who likes to read whenever my nearly 3 year old lets me! I prefer UF over PNR because I enjoy escaping to a magical mystical world but there can be a little love interest on the side! My current fabe authors are Molly Harper, Charlaine Harris, Stacia Kane and Rachel Vincent but ask me again next week and they may have changed!
Yes, I prefer UF over PNR as well since I like more plot than romance. I've never heard of Molly Harper or Rachel Vincent, but I love Charlaine Harris and Stacia Kane!
Hi All, I am always reading something…usually UF. Always looking for the next great series. My favorite series are:1. Fever-Karen Moning
2. Mercy Thompson-Patricia Briggs
3. Sookie Stackhouse-Charlaine Harris
4. Night Huntress & Night Huntress World- Jeaniene Frost
5. Hunger Games-Suzanne Collins
6. Dark Ink Chronicles- Elle Jasper
7. Shifter-Rachel Vincent
8. Chicagoland Vampires - Chloe Neill
9. Vampire Academy- Richelle Mead
10. Study Series-Maria V. Snyder
11. Blood Destiny- Connie Shuttle
12. Jane True-Nicole Peeler
13. Jane Jameson- Molly Harper
14. Riley Jensen- Keri Arthur
15. Valerie Dearborn-Caroline Hanson
16. Mageri-Dannika Dark
17. Kate Daniels- Ilona Andrews
18. Timberwolves- Tammy Blackwell
Recently read that was good:
1. Scorpio Races by Maggie Steifvater
2. Sweet Evil - Wendy Higgins
3. Dark Descendant- Nikki Glass
I am anxiously waiting the next in the series of …
1. Daughter of Smoke and Bones by Laini Taylor
2. Bloodlines - Richelle Mead
3. Penryn and the End of Days by Susan Ee
4. Fever World- Karen Moning
Hello there. :) I'm Yzabel, from France. I like reading in general, writing my own stories, drawing, and urban fantasy is one of my old loves (although I probably haven't read as much as I could or should have in that specific genre). At the moment, I'm quite into the Dresden Files—but I'm always looking to discover new authors and series, for sure.
I've heard a lot of great things about the Dresden Files, but I haven't read any of those books yet.
I'm Lisa Mason and live in the San Francisco Bay area with my husband, the artist, jeweler, and serious book collector, Tom Robinson. I love to cook, garden, walk around the lake, and read. I recently discovered urban fantasy and love it! I’ve read Charlaine Harris, Kim Harrison, Jim Butcher, Patricia Briggs, Laurell K. Hamilton, Neal Gaiman, J.K. Rowling, Stephenie Meyer, Stacia Kane, Cassandra Clare, and Carole Nelson Douglas and will be posting my reviews of fifty books and more in the coming days. I sincerely hope that, if you love urban fantasy and are looking for something new, you’ll give my first urban fantasy The Garden of Abracadabra a try!
Hey, My names Shanta and I'm from Louisville Ky. Im a late reading bloomer and didnt start really getting into reading books like a addict untill I feel in love with the twilight books in my 20's. I love urban fantasy thats pretty much all i read. All I need is a kick butt heroine and a sexy romance and I'm hooked lol.I've been part of this goup for a while and I want to start getting more involved. Any book recommendations please let me know im always looking for something new.

Hello, all!My name is Fred, I live in Denver, CO, and I read a lot. I've been on Goodreads for a little while now, but I'm just now starting to explore the Groups, and since Urban Fantasy is one of the genres I'm reading a lot of, I thought I'd join up, get familiar with the place, and trawl for recommendations (I'll be looking up Charles De Lint next...). Being somewhat contrarian, I don't actually like the Sookie Stackhouse novels - I made it through the third one before deciding I'd had enough of her whining - and I only read Twilight on a dare (and I want the time back...). On the other hand, I really enjoy Ilona Andrews, Kevin Hearne, Jim Butcher, Molly Harper, Mario Acevedo, and Jeanne Stein (among others - still updating my bookshelf).
Looking forward to getting to know y'all!
Hi all!!!Ever since joining goodreads I find a read nothing but urban fantasies these days!!! I just love them. Twilight opened me to the genre, and they hunger games got me hooked.
My absolutes favorites are currently the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning and Downside Ghosts by Stacia Kane. I find myself going back to reread these series every time I get bored!!!
Hi, everyone. My name is Becca, and I've been lurking around the group for a few weeks. I've been really into UF since 2006, when I picked up Storm Front in a used book store and thought, Holy cow ... this is so cool! Since then I've read quite a bit of UF -- adult, YA, and MG -- and some PNR, too. I also read some traditional fantasy and sci-fi.
A few months ago I started spending most of my time on the indie-book scene. As a result, I've begun to feel a bit disconnected from my favorite traditionally published authors and series. I'm hoping participating here will remind me to keep my finger in that pie. It's such a sweet pie, after all!
Let's see, what else? I teach at a small college in the U.S. Just today I was working on a YA lit syllabus that will include some UF -- should be really fun to teach. I read almost entirely on Kindle, nowadays, and I particularly like looong series. The worst thing in the world is having to say goodbye forever to great worlds and characters. Okay, that's it. Looking forward to talking books! :)
Hi all! Vicky Loebel here - not new to goodreads, but only just figuring out how things work. I'm a 50-something writer, tech writer, and front-end (ish) developer in Tucson, AZI became a UF fan back with the original Sookie Stackhouse & Dresden novels and love anything (UF or other) with good writing, reasonably filled in plot holes, and a sense of fun.
My own first UF, "Keys to the Coven" has just come out as an indie e-book & is available free to anyone who'd like to post a review (But that's the last newbie self-promotion, I promise!)
I'm so happy to find a community of fellow UF readers...I think... My TBR pile seems to have grown demonically in the last week!

My name is Scott Moon and I am new to Goodreads. My early reading was almost entirely fantasy and some science fiction, but now I read about anything. I work in law enforcement, and even though I work in law enforcement, I am happily married. I read Kindle books on my iphone and listen to books from Audible.com on my iphone. To be honest, the phone has taken over my life, because I also tweet alot and use it for all the regular time draining activities that living in the modern world seems to require, i.e. constant availability to anyone who wants anything. Moving on: I am a writer, musician, and artist, though I mostly write. Can't tell you what exactly, because this is not the self promotion section of Goodreads. I love books, and that is why I am here.
My name is Michael and I first started reading everything I could get by Stephen King. After which I found William Gibson and dove head first into Cyberpunk and dabbled in Steampunk. Now I'm reading mostly Sci-fi and Fantasy. My first introduction to Fantasy was Game of Thrones and I read all of them one after the other and loved them, Right now I'm going through Pratchetts Discworld books but I'd really like to get into some Urban Fantasy. Does anyone have any good suggestions for a good first novel to read that does a good job of representing the genre ?
Michael wrote: "My name is Michael and I first started reading everything I could get by Stephen King. After which I found William Gibson and dove head first into Cyberpunk and dabbled in Steampunk. Now I'm readin..."Hi, Michael. Welcome! I'd recommend starting with Jim Butcher's Dresden Files. The first two are solid but not quite as good as the next ... um ... eleven? But the series as a whole is fantastic -- my favorite -- and is seminal in the genre. Then there are some other heavy hitters: Patricia Briggs's Mercy Thompson series (plus spin-offs) and Ilona Andrews's Kate Daniels series. Those alone would keep you going a while. You might also check out the "what are you reading" thread. Tons and tons of great recommendations, there. This is a big genre with lots of strong entries ... fortunately for us! :)
Hi. I'm in the NY metropolitan area, and I'm about to start graduate school. I've been reading fantasy since high school. I think the first urban fantasy book i ever read was Elizabeth Bear's Blood and Iron, which while amazing, is not indicative of the genre. My favorite urban fantasy authors are Seanan McGuire, Karen Chance, and Patricia Briggs.
I just joined and wanted to quickly introduce myself. I love to read (total bookaholic) mostly paranormal romance , urban fantasy, and darker YA, and I’m also a published author. I read about 3 to 4 books a month. This group seemed cool and really interesting. Plus, Parajunkee is just awesome and I love her book reviews. Anyhoo, I look forward to discussing books and discovering new authors.
So, any recommendations? I’m looking for a few good UF zombie books! ;-)
Happy reading,
Sherry

Another part-Native American protagonist is Joanne Walker, starting with Urban Shaman. First book is an excellent introduction to the series, which is focused on Native American mythologies and spiritualism as the better Celtic mythologies.
Hello, I'm Chris from England, but I live in Japan where I work as an English teacher. I have a wife and a cute cat.I basically joined this group because I'm not entirely sure what urban fantasy is and was wondering whether I read it or not. Because I live in a country that doesn't speak English I generally have a limited choice on what to read based one what's in the tiny foreign language section of my book shop. To be honest, I'm happy that way. I like to read various different genres.
Hi, my name is Scott VanKirk. I'm a long time fan of Urban Fantasy and the writer of the new Urban Fantasy series, Chronicles Of The Mighty Finn which begins with The Dryad's Kiss.I've been lurking on this group for quite a while, but I don't think I ever introduced myself. I love to read and I've been doing a lot of reviewing lately. Currently I'm tending to read Urban Fantasy by lesser known authors searching for those hidden gems.
Hi all! I just realized I never posted once I joined. Oops!Anyways, I'm Danie. I'm 22, and I'm new to UF. I've never really read much of it, ever, but it's a genre I'm really getting interested in. Any recommendations are welcome!
Hi I'm Louise and I write, read and edit all kinds of things. But my favourite books of all are urban fantasy, if I had to choose. My fave series?... Harry Dresden, Rachel Morgan, Mercedes Thompson. I quite liked the iron Druid series but they don't have quite the depth of the others. I love worlds so well realised, I feel I could walk down the streets if I needed to, find my way to the coffee shop and know how to handle the various characters.
I look forward to getting lots of new book tips here.

Hi everyone! I'm new to the group so I thought I'd introduce myself.I'm Ashley, and I love to read just about everything. My favorite genre is UF by far, however. I'm currently reading Devil Said Bang by Richard Kadrey, but my all time favorite book is Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman (my fiance actually used this book to propose - we're both nerds :) ).
I'm looking forward to learning more about series/authors I've not discovered yet through this group!

Hello folks. I'm DC, author (this week--yay) of the Hipposync Archives. It's so nice to be here with other UF readers and authors. I don't think that there is a separate group for 'contemporary' urban fantasy so I guess I'm in the right place and, I suspect, there is no need to split hairs. Last UF read: Rivers of London

Hello, My name is chloe and I live in the sounth of england. I absolutly love urban fantasy books and as I work in a book shop I spend all my wages on books that arrive in that I just have to read! One big problem is that I'm sometimes overwhelemed by options and so I may be asking you all for advice on whether a book is actually worth buying or not!

Hello all,My name is Scott. I live in eastern Tennessee and mostly read horror/paranormal and fantasy. I'm also an author and have several titles on Amazon.
Just getting into the urban fantasy genre, but it is a breath of fresh air after so many years of traditional sword and sorcery in make-believe worlds.
