[ as ] ar as people like to say about her looks, Nymeria is probably not a genius. And she isn't. She's not stupid either, the way people think of her. She doesn't show any high level of intelligence, but she has the drive to make up for it. Being condemned as stupid has both pros and cons. Most of her teachers don't pay her any mind, which she supposes would be good, if the few that did weren't staring at her chest most times. Her peers don't ask her for help with work, allowing her to focus on her own studies. But the biggest con, she supposes, is this: it makes her a target. Not for the general populace of the school, but something worse.

It is no secret that Nymeria is fairly timid. Most times, her conversations are held with one-word sentences and her gaze locked on the floor. The only people she can hold a real conversation with are infants and toddlers, and only the closest of friends. That says something. Of course, there's a reason for this, just like the black eye she seems to always have. The same black eye that lies about, and knows people don't believe her. But what can they do; it'd just be worse. It'd turn into something other than the little things she can maybe cover up with a lie.

Above all else, Nym's an escapist. Telling herself that she has to get a scholarship or just find some way out; an escape. And for her, the greatest escape she has is volleyball. The singular focus on smacking a ball onto the other side of a court while moving in tandem with four to five other people is amazing. You melt into something bigger while being your own individual.

[ life ] sometimes throws you signs, and other times it does not. Nym's life was one of those other times. Her father went from a happy middle class working man, to a gambling unemployed deadbeat. He still tried to be there, she knew. Mostly for birthdays and holidays, but all other times he would be laying low. Nymeria understood that, even as a ten-year-old who had to open the door to men in suits with mean looks on their faces asking for her father. She'd lied and told them he had work, and they bought it. Maybe they thought it would be too much trouble to just walk through the door, make a left, and open up the first door on the right. Maybe they didn't really care. Either way, it only prompted her father's gambling habits, and with it came the debts.

The same debt that forced them out of their cozy suburban home and into a trailer for a year. They managed as best they could, mostly able to because her mother kicked their father out. Then they moved up an apartment, her mother sticking a thick envelope in the landlord's hand whenever they were behind on rent. She'd never know it until it was too late that her mother danced for twenties and took her clothes off for fifties. But it wasn't enough with all that they had to pay, so she took pictures and put them in envelopes and hoped they'd last until her next real paycheck. Nym would never know, never never, that those pictures weren't of her mother.

It was a hot summer before she turned thirteen when she broke her arm. Correction, when Rue broke her arm. She said something he didn't like--she can't remember all the details--and then he had her pinned. He was much bigger, too big for her to really fight back the way she would have a year before. He wasn't scrawny anymore, claiming he buffed up to protect their mom from debt collectors still looking for their old man. But she'd always thought it'd been for the girls. They'd both been wrong. All she can remember is that crazed look in his eye before he snapped her arm over the table like a twig. Her mother came rushing out, their younger sister in tow. Off to the hospital, minus an explanation but multiplied by the endless worry and the consuming thought of the bills because they weren't insured, no, not anymore.

The first time she "tripped" was in the eighth grade. A boy had asked her out and she said yes, and her brother found out. She showed up with her eye black as night and he ran off. The first time she "slipped in the tub" came a few months after that. A handprint the color of ripe grapes found its way onto her side, like a kiss on her ribcage. The girls in the locker room asked her what was wrong, but all she said was that she slipped up and kissed a boy. She didn't do that again. You'd think that at this point life would throw her another sign other than the relation of boys and Nym, but it missed the memo.

She was fourteen when Rue upped a level. Her mother was at work, her sister was asleep, and her lips were sealed with a sock. He came without warning, one minute not there the next he was calling her names. Nym always wondered what went wrong. They were perfectly fine when they were younger. Rue would be the poster child of a big brother, taking care of her and later Liza. Sure, they'd fight, but what siblings didn't? She thought it would be strange if they didn't fight, didn't yell at each other. But she didn't think fighting would end up like this.

Nym doesn't speak about for two reasons: 1) she can't begin to explain it, and 2) her family has already had enough. Rumors about her father and mother were damaging enough--particularly for Liza, who was shunned by the mothers of the better off children--and just adding it on with her brother would be no help. So Nymeria keeps her mouth and eyes shut, hoping it'll go away. Which was part of why she joined the volleyball team in freshman year. She spent less time at home, and more on the court. She could hide the man-made bruises with ones from stray balls. She could drown all her worries and fears in the cheer of spectators. She could melt away into the precise oblivion of the court without having to worry about her brother coming to get her.

And it could be her ticket out of Clearwater.

This particular girl possesses long tresses of straight brown hair that is usually arranged in a sloppy updo because her laziness. She was once told by an boy who was pining for her that her eyes resembled the sparkling ocean water, blue and vibrant against the pale sand. It's safe to say she walked away awkwardly after that encounter. Her hands are slender and delicate, but her fingertips are calloused from many hours practising the guitar or cello. Park is known for her visually vibrant fashion style. There is not a day you see this girl and she is not wearing a color that is absolutely standing out. From her signature baby pink lipstick and her neon hoodie, dress - pretty much anything neon can be incorporated into her outfit.

P E R S O N A L I T Y
It wouldn’t surprise people if Park actually barfed rainbows. This girl literally radiates optimism. Or so she wants people to think. The permanent smile on her face and the fact that there isn’t a day she hasn’t laughed, people would assume she is not all that intellectual. Well Park isn’t exactly the smartest person in the world but she has managed to get a scholarship into the culinary course without her parents’ connections and she very damn proud about.

This particular brunette’s mind always wanders. She always has a million thoughts racing through her head – some rather important but the majority of them bizarre and out of the ordinary according to the mindset of the “norms” she calls them. There are many times when Park has caused a incident in the kitchen as the result of her mind that always seems to go on many adventures at the wrong times. The benefit of this is Park is able to come up with very creative ideas, for music and also for her many cooking recipes.

Park lives and breathes music. She doesn’t like to brag ( she totally does though) but she is what you call a musical prodigy. For as long as she could remember she has always had a passion for music. She can’t explain but music makes her feel like she can do anything she can possibly conjure up in that little head of hers no matter what. Music is like an outlet to all the problems that have come up in her life and a way to connect with people in a way, expressing herself and her feelings without words. She can get really damn poetic so if you don’t want an hour long seminar don’t ask her any questions about music that can lead into anything deeper.

There are times when a fuse just blows in Park. The aspiring chef/musician is known for her temper. Despite her sunshine personality, there are times when she will verbally head-to-head with you. Generally, Park has no filter. Her vocabulary is filled with even words that would make Urban Dictionary users gasp but she tries to keep it on the down low. Knowing this about Park, it’s no surprise she is rather sassy. Sarcastic comments are her forte and disses are like her Bible. In others words, Park is a literal rainbow of personalities.

Ingrid is a tomboy like you wouldn't believe, she's probably more masculine than two of her brothers combined. Growing up with four older siblings kind of brought it out of her -- the competitiveness, foul language, guy mind... you know how it goes. Mommy desperately wanted a cute little girl in dresses, and the universe played an incredibly ironic joke on her and gave the woman Ingrid instead. They tried to stop her from playing all the sports with her brothers at first, then they got over it. You know why? She's fucking good. Especially with volleyball, but that's kind of another story entire.

Westerlook shuts people down pretty quickly if they question her abilities, or try to make it so she doesn't fit in... like she has KMA, and that's the only family she needs. Her teammates have influenced her attitude a lot -- KMA has given her confidence, agility, and a sense of sisterhood she wouldn't be able to find anywhere else. But like... it also gave her an attitude problem, a lot of regrettable nights she doesn't remember, and a rocking bod. She doesn't consider any of it negative, though other people might. That's the thing with KMA, the girls on the inside love it, but there's a few people (namely jealous girls) that don't.

History: Ingrid has limited memories without her bestfriend, and co-captain, Bee. They lived pretty close to each other in Clearwater, but even if they lived on opposite sides of town it wouldn't have separated them. The girls have been close since birth (probably due to their parents being friends in high school, but Westerlook likes to think it would have happened without their constant playdates).

Basically the idea is a six-girl team of volleyball players, all girls, all in college. Either freshman, sophomores, or juniors — all six girls are in the same sorority and live in the same house, it’s all comes with the deal. They all went to high school together, and they have been competing together for a few years and building up their reputation for a while now.

These six girls are known for working hard, and being one of the best teams in Clearwater. They also have the a reputation completely unrelated to volleyball, which names them some of the biggest partiers around town (they like to celebrate!). They can outdrink most of their guy counterparts, but that most certainly doesn’t make them easy. They are known for being arrogant girls that think very highly of themselves… but like, can you blame them?

You’ll often find these girls on the beach (surfing for fun or playing volleyball), or at a party. No one ever seems to see them in their classes, but they all have to maintain a GPA to be in their sorority so obviously they’re doing fine in that department.

So, Bee has had long golden locks for as long as she can remember. Until like two weeks ago when she cut her hair to shoulder length and now she's rocking the cute bob look. But really, who cares about hair? Bee is definitely more about the fact that she's 5'8", a feat of height she's quite proud of. Hey, height is definitely a boost in volleyball, and those long legs definitely drive the boys wild. And she gets to flaunt those legs in all those bikini bottoms.

So Bridget? Well she's quite the firecracker. In a lot of ways, being around Bridget is like being around someone who is on a caffeine high all the time. Why? Well she likes to say she's high on life, but the truth is that Bee just always seems to be excited. She finds that the motto 'fake it until you make it' is quite true and can be applied to life. Yeah, she's the queen of hype and energy. The first one to be blowing the trumpet through the house to wake everyone up. The one who jumps at the chance to do karaoke, even when sober, even though she knows her voice leaves a lot to be desired. Bee just likes to jump up, to take life by the horns and plow right through. Thinking things out? Caution? Not really her strong suit. It's what makes her such a great hitter, because she's willing to dive straight into the sand and hit the ball no matter how much it might hurt or how much sand she might get in her face. Sometimes being a risk taker pays off in the end.

More about Bee? Well she has confidence for days. Yeah, it really takes a lot to shake her confidence. Like, a lot, a lot. Even boys can't really rattle her bars. Then again, Bee likes to think of boys as a cuddly warm pillow to warm her sheets up rather than actual relationship material. She just doesn't have time for boys between KMA and that psychology degree she's pursuing. Well...she has time for boys. But only at parties...and only for a few nights.

The only serious part of Bee's life is her volleyball team. Otherwise? Get in line, take a number, and pray you can snag her attention long enough to get anywhere.

So you have to be wondering where the hell the nickname Bee came from, yeah? Well when she was little her mom used to call her 'Honey Bee'. And sometime in middle school Ingrid was over and her mom called her that and Ingrid was teasing her about it, taunting her about the embarrassing nickname. From there it wasn't long before Ingrid was shouting 'Bee' from down the hallway just to get her attention before class. And it caught on. Before she knew it? Bee was just kind of the natural way to get her attention. So yeah, that's the story of the nickname. As for the rest of Bridget's life?

Well Bee likes to say that Ingrid's life was a mess before she came along. See, Ingrid was first born, which is kind of the metaphor for their life. Because Ingrid always seems to be the one that really takes charge, and sure Bee follows up pretty close behind but she's always half a step behind Ingrid's brilliant ideas. And yeah, they've been destined for best friend status since they were babies. Even their mom's were best friends. And the fact that they only lived a block away from each other? That meant a lot of play dates. Not to mention Ingrid had like a hundred older brothers. Each of which Bridget has had a crush on at some point in time or another. But hey, that's what happens.

While Ingrid had four older siblings, Bee was a total only child. Which meant that the second bedroom in her house is basically Ingrid's room 2.0, or the guest room, whatever. And it means that the den of the house was basically sleepover HQ. Yeah, Ingrid was the sister, Bee always wanted. And in High School? Well that's when it all really started. When beach volleyball became a little more serious. More serious than surfing. And in college? Well that's when the sorority happened. And KMA was born with it's deadly serious, drop dead gorgeous, team of ball busting girls. Yeah, KMA is all about confidence and partying it up and living life. And it's definitely encouraged a very competitive aspect of Bee's personality.

[Personality]
Rhys' sunshine personality is the product of his parents' darker years, though no one would ever really know about that, now would they? As it is, it doesn't go completely unnoticed by his family, the way the younger Wilste son is a little . . . Off. Even when he's forcing a smile, trying to be a little lighter for the sake of his family, it would be hard not to notice the things about him that make him stand out as the black sheep in the crowd. Even as a kid, he was always a bit of a loner, preferring instead to be by himself rather than be in the company of a group. It wasn't exactly a unique day in grade school for him to be called the 'weird' boy by his fellow snot-nosed little squirts. His penchant for being alone is still the case today: it's not uncommon to find the boy alone, with his headphones in, scribbling in the ratty sketchbook he's had for the past for years. Yeah, he's a starving artist, how fucking Edgar Allan Poe of him.

In case it wasn't obvious enough, Rhys is extremely guarded when it comes to anyone who isn't family - it's been his experience most people want something from others, whether its attention or money or whatever else someone may think you have. The only time he's fine with accepting that is when he's more than a little tipsy at a party, ready to disappear in a bedroom with a girl who is willing to do better things with her mouth rather than try to have a conversation with him. Rhys is the type who would rather be sitting back and observing as oppose to being smack in the middle of things. And when he does actually engage himself, he's kind of a sarcastic asshole, so maybe it's for the best that he wisely keeps his mouth shut most of the time.

Personality: Basil is an interesting person to try to explain. There is a quality about him that sort of draws people in, and it just might be his smile. He doesn't really mean to do the things he does with his expressions, they sort of just happen with his attitude. His trademark smirk, for example; half of the time it fashions itself of Basil's lips without his permission. He just has this charisma, but it isn't forced. The majority of the time, Basil is just being himself. He's charming without trying... so hell, imagine what he could do if he actually meant to make a girl blush.

There are some drawbacks to this devil-may-care personality he has though... he treats nearly everyone the same, so it's really hard to tell if he likes you, or if you're just another acquaintance he smiles at in the hallway as you cross paths. He has a very go-with-the-flow style, so it's really hard to tell if you mean something to him or not. He would never be rude to someone on purpose, always trying to make people feel welcome even if it makes himself uncomfortable. Basil has never really had a knack for showing someone he cares... he sometimes has trouble determining first if he cares. It's not like he totally has commitment issues or anything... he just can't really identify when he has feels for someone, it's very hard for him to realize, and usually he's the last person to figure it out.

So, it's safe to assume Basil doesn't act on impulses, or at least he tries not to. The last thing he would like to do is lead someone on--especially since his crushes in the past have lasted for like a few weeks or less each. He's never fallen hard for anyone before though, so maybe that could change. He gets into a lot of fights with all of the girls he's ever been with in a romantic way, because he doesn't treat them special enough... aka in his eyes, they're just the same as everyone else -- which for some reason girls don't like? Either way, he does this thing where he searches for flaws in people he likes -- determined to find a reason why they won't work together, so the chances probably wouldn't be good even if the girls he liked weren't so self-centered. He self-sabotages his own relationships without realizing it... oops? His friendships are fantastic though, so there's that!

Overall, Basil is a pretty warm and welcoming kind of guy. He definitely doesn't chase girls, he lets them come to him, which they most certainly do. That's probably why the KMA girls like having him around so much, he never tries to get into their pants, he's just the right guy to take out with you.

History: Basil grew up a fairly sheltered life, so it's safe to say that when he got to HS, he broke a lot of rules. That was definitely when he broke free and realized who he was as a person... though it was not without a lot of struggling -- and not without his bestfriend/sister, Blake.

Blake came into his family in a kind of weird way. One second it was just Basil and his Mom (being that his Dad was mostly on tours or on the army base working) and then there was this girl constantly around being babysat by his mother. It slowly became more permanent, since her father worked with his, and eventually they were going on tours together and it all became a given kind of deal that Blake just lived with them. It wasn't that big of a deal to Basil, he and Blake got along great. It was when they were both kind of young, and Basil never really understood a lot of what was happening. He knew that sometimes his father was there, and then other times he was fighting for his country. He was naive, and it worked that way for a while. Basil was always around his grandparents and stuff though too, so it wasn't like there was ever a shortage of family for him.

It all just kind of went downhill after his Dad died, which was about 4 years ago? It wasn't supposed to happen like that. Like he doesn't wish it was Blake's Dad, but when he was grieving Blake was just trying to be there for him and it wasn't working. He just felt awful, and it's not like he wanted her to feel bad that her Dad lived... it just wasn't fitting anymore. Things got weird between him and Blake, and they definitely weren't as close anymore. Basil wasn't like angry with her, he just didn't want her pity.

Now their parents are getting married, and they haven't really fixed their awkwardness. Like they're fine as long as you don't leave them in a room alone together, but Basil doesn't like to talk about his feelings so like... it's probably not going to get fixed for a while. He goes out of his way to avoid having to talk about what happened, he merely insists that they're fine, and he's honestly so excited to all be one big happy family ~~gag~~.

Jared is about as musical as one middle-class college student can be. He's also a computer nerd. He doesn't play video games, but he enjoys coding programs and micro controllers. He also entered the FLL (FIRST Lego League) with his friends in high school, and won. He only entered this competition, and not the FRC (FIRST Robotics Competition) or FTC (FIRST Technology Competition), because his friends refused to attempt them.

Growing up in a small town, for Jared, sucked. You hear all these stories about how smaller towns have more of a sense of community, but for Jared this wasn't true. His small town, a dwindling rural cluster of sagging buildings, was situated pretty much in the middle of nowhere. When his family decided to move to Clearwater, it took them eight hours driving on barely-existent roads through endless grassland before they reached the highway. This place is so remote, the only way to locate it is with Google Earth. On the ~~dirt~~ dust road leading into the town, a rotten, sagging wooden sign is painted in flaky white and green paint. It reads; Welcome to Riverside, the smallest town in the USA. Underneath this useless piece of patently obvious information, it states the population; Population 100 (2010). Back to the point - it's a small town. His family left when he was 13, and they've never been back. During the first 13 years of his life, he was bullied by just about everyone at the tiny primary school. It had a playground that stretched between the main road and the dried-up creek, and a solitary classroom. There was a patch of dirt on the grass, from where the other kids had smashed his face into the dirt at least a hundred times. So really, the only sense of community was the hatred of Jared.
The day they left was the best day of his life. His parents had warned him and his sister beforehand, but it was somehow different to actually see his parents frantically throwing bags into the car. They drove out at 8am, an hour before school would have started. Once they finally reached the highway, it was a simple matter of driving straight down the road until they reached the turnoff.
High school was great for Jared. He had friends, and they were intelligent. Together, they entered the FLL, and placed, which was a significant achievement for five teenaged boys who'd never built a robot from Lego before.
College came, and the boys slowly grew apart. Jared developed a greater interest in music, and with other people from Clearwater he formed a band. They called themselves the mesopotamians, after a fictional band in a song by They Might Be Giants. Now he studies various music-related college subjects and intends to become a musician.

Personality: He is the stereotypical country boy in many ways. He loves the outdoors, is not afraid of hard work, and overall loves being active. Because of his early childhood experiences he can be very shy, and prefers others to approach him. However, once you get to know him, he is fiercely loyal and very protective. When it comes to girls, he knows nothing -- he has never even kissed a girl.

Backstory:
Levi was born in Belmont, Alabama. His mother, Mary, died giving birth to him, and his father, Richard, was devastated. Richard could not cope with the death of his wife, and needed to place the blame somewhere, so it all fell on Levi. The first few years were not bad, someone was always at the house to help out. But once the Mary's death became 'old news', people stopped showing up. All of Levi's teachers would ignore his cuts and bruises, telling themselves that kids are clumsy, or it was none of their business.

Not long after his 9th birthday, Richard came home even more drunk than usual. He saw Levi sitting at the kitchen table, trying to figure out his math homework. Richard, enraged at the sight of his son, lunged at Levi, knocking the table and chairs over in the process. The beating that came afterwards did not last particularly long, but the way the chair broke underneath him was what caused the scar on his back.

That Monday at school, the gash in his back was noticed by a group of students in the locker room during gym. They quickly told the gym teacher, who pulled Levi aside to talk about it. After finally pulling the whole truth out of him, CPS was called and Levi was immediately driven the 2 and a half hours to his Uncle's house in Edgewood. Uncle Scott lived alone on a ranch, and was happy to take in Levi. He was appalled at his brother's treatment of his only nephew.

Levi grew up happy after moving to the ranch. He spent the majority of his time caring for and breaking in the new horses, and cleaning the stables. When he wasn't working on the ranch, he was practicing rugby with the Junior Yellowhammers. Uncle Scott loved seeing Levi grow from such a scared shy little boy into a bold strong young man. He attended all of Levi's games and would often invite the whole team back to the ranch for dinner after big wins. Few people knew about his past, but the ones who did still looked at him with pity in their eyes, which made Levi feel like that scared, beaten boy all over again. He knew the only way to escape their glances was to get out of Alabama.

First of all, that hair of Bash's? He didn't come screaming into the world with raven black wisps on his head. In fact, those locks of his were naturally dirty blond, but he was itching for a change and figured if he was going to do it, the summer was the best time to go for it. Never mind the fact that he's probably killing his hair, considering he's practically an aquatic animal and chlorine is about as good for the follicles as dye is. But anywho, on to the rest of him: he has blue eyes that pretty well resembles the water he's so entranced with. He's the palest of pales during any season that's not summer and even then, the tan only lasts because most of days are spent by the ocean for some length of time. For a swimmer though, Bash is pretty huge, looking like more of a linebacker than the leanness that is typically associated with ~~humanoid fish~~ swimmers. His broad shoulders don't help his case much, but he still manages to cut through the water pretty fast.

Personality:
There's not much to Bash, he's a pretty simple guy. Pleasant to be around, quick to smile and crack a joke in effort to get those around him grinning too. Because if there's one pretty significant thing about him, it's the fact that he likes to keep everyone happy - in fact, he's been known to go to some great lengths in effort to please everybody. He's been told when he's not beaming like a goof, he can actually look like that snobbish asshole everyone wants to shove off a cliff, so it's a pretty good thing there's nearly always some sort of expression twisting up his relatively-punchable face. Most of the time, those expressions of his? They're pretty unique to the O'Shaughnessy boy.

But in all other aspects, he's just like most guys his age: still trying to figure out what he's doing with his life while all-too-easily getting distracted by the rap music that's known to accompany house parties and the drunken cavemen that always inhabit such places. Yeah, his taste in music isn't his finest personality trait but what can you do, right? His girlfriend has told him on more than one occasion that he can be just as big of a caveman with enough alcohol running through his veins, but he doesn't think he's that bad . . . Maybe? Merp. But yeah, he's a little bit of a floater, not really sure what he wants to do with his life. It's not like he can swim for a living ~~unfortunately~~.
Backstory:
The O'Shaughnessy family is that giant family that has always been a little dysfunctional, if not the one everyone has secretly wanted desperately to be a part of. It's because the love between them has always been extremely obvious, even when the siblings are practically tearing each other's hair out. As the middle child smack in the middle of a family of seven kids, Bash's life has always been relatively caught between his older siblings and the younger babies of the family. Joshua, the oldest at twenty-nine, now has a family of his own, and Bash has been known to babysit his tiny niece from time to time. Brandon, twenty-six, was the older brother that was actually the one who was responsible for Bash's love for swimming after shoving him in the deep end of the pool when Bash was nine, figuring it was past time his younger brother either sink or swim. His older sister Clarke, twenty-four, is probably the biggest badass in the entire family, not that you'd ever guess it by looking at her. Harper, eighteen, is the black sheep of the family but they love her anyways and Jackson, sixteen is the brilliant brains. At twelve, the baby of the family is Trinity and she's the sassiest twelve year old Bash has ever met.

‧ | PERSONALITY ▬ Finley… Finley’s not a force to be reckoned with. Her protective nature rivals that of a bear and it’s always been that way. Her instinct to protect comes in all forms, whether it’s an underdog, a child, a minority, some stranger on the street being harassed, if Finley feels that something is wrong she will not hesitate to jump in and intervene. She’s a caring person but that is often masked under various layers of sarcasm and blunt jabs intended to be funny but usually come off as bitchy. She doesn’t actively try to be mean (unless you give her a reason to be), it’s simply in the way she chooses to say things that can sound rude or demeaning. Considering Finley knows what she meant, she’s not likely to apologise if it’s misinterpreted – apologies just aren’t really her thing. No regrets, right?

Finley’s the type of person who enjoys doing activities and getting involved in whatever community she belongs to. Because she’s a people person, Fin tends to flow with different crowds and develop various skill sets and interests as a result. She’s a swimmer, she’s a dancer, she likes to spray-tag, she’s not half-bad with a box a tools, she volunteers at the local daycare, the list goes on.

That being said, she’s always been an independent person. Growing up with many siblings, she learned at a young age that in life, you either push or get pushed and she refused to settle for the latter. Yeah, this means that she tends to be bossy (that damn mother hen nature) and upfront. That’s just who she is and she’s not about to change for you, or anyone. ~~well, maybe just someone~~

Hamilton has never been the most intimidating of men, he only stands at 5'9", which isn't exactly the tallest of heights for most guys. To most people, Hamilton is snarky. He's sarcastic with a dry sense of humor that usually includes 'teasing' remarks. Although some would say his remarks are just plain mean. But he doesn't intend them to be in a cruel light, he just says them because he's being sarcastic. Too bad not everyone understands that, and sometimes Hamilton doesn't know when it's a good moment to keep his mouth shut. Plus there's that whole habit of his about going too far. Pushing someone too far and actually hurting their feelings. And when that happens? Well he definitely feels guilty.

See, Hamilton doesn't actually like to hurt people so when he does, even emotionally, he often becomes overcome with this sense of guilt and will blush and withdraw on himself. ~~Too proud to apologize because he's a little shit.~~ Yeah. Apologizing is a big thing for him, so if he apologizes to you? Damn, aren't you someone special. But more than likely? Hamilton will sort of suffer his guilt in silence, let it eat at him for a few days and then store it away until one day it will resurface in the form of a nightmare. He's not very wise when it comes to dealing with his own problems with people.

Why can't people just be simple? Like swimming. Swimming is simple, and Hammy happens to be pretty damn good at it too. It helps clear his mind. Everything is so much simpler in the water.

▬▬ the easiest way to understand Tonya -- and save yourself a fuckton of pain -- is to understand that she just doesn't play nice. Polite, nice, gentle, kind, these words simply don't exist for Tonya. No one would ever get anywhere if they just stood and held the door open for everyone else all day. You have to actually step through that door yourself, let it start to slam on someone's toe or face -- who cares. That's the entire point: Tonya stopped caring who she hurt in the process of getting to the top, and look where she is now. Full ride scholarship to Clearwater University to play lacrosse, 3000 miles from a stifling home, and well on her way to the pros, so long as nothing terrible happens.

Tonya carries herself with a certain distrust that doesn't immediately present itself as distrust or wariness. She's the sort of sweet that's obviously fake; her smiles are startling not in their amusement or mirth, but in their sharpness, their savageness. Her exterior -- the ever-changing hair, eyeliner sharp enough to kill, generally unimpressed expression -- is as intimidating as her skill on the court or her devil-may-care, fuck-you-all attitude. And besides simply being unapproachable, Tonya has a harrowing lack of filter. The only consequence that matters to her is whatever it is that means she's lost. Anything else is dust in the wind, and she treats it as such.

Almost her entire life has become about [lacrosse/kickboxing]. It's the one thing she's decided actually matters to her. Besides, between keeping up her grades and training, Tonya doesn't have time for much else. It's not like she cares about much else, either. For her, there's only winning and losing. And only one of those is acceptable. Emotions simply aren't part of the picture. They're extraneous, superfluous, get in the way and complicate decisions that would otherwise be easy. Tonya has trained herself to lock out anything that will fuck up her path -- emotions, other people, whatever it is -- in the exact same way she's trained herself to throw a punch or manipulate her stick. She's here to win, that's all.

▬▬ from the moment she understood the word, "out" was Tonya's only goal. It was a trap, that run-down excuse for a neighborhood in the middle of goddamn nowhere, Northern California. There was never any approval in her life, just her parent's projected desires, her neighbor's silent judgement, and her classmate's distrust.

Tonya found her escape in athletics, first with martial arts, then with soccer. When she tried out for women's lacrosse in high school, she realized this was what she'd been waiting for her whole life. Her parents, of course, didn't entirely approve. But Tonya was good at it, and she grew better at ignoring what her parents wanted with each passing month. If they frowned when she abandoned homework for her martial arts training -- it made her stronger, more agile on the court -- she pretended not to see. If they never showed up to any of her games, she threw casual excuses at her teammates and coach and carried on.

It all paid off, every night spent sacrificing sleep to keep her grades up, every morning she woke up sore and aching, every day she pushed herself through training and practice -- it all paid off with one letter that invited her across the country to play (and study) at Clearwater University, practically for free.

Tonya took it, without hesitation, without a second thought. For her, there had never even truly been a question there.

Even from 3,000 miles away, it seems she can sometimes still feel the weight of her family's disapproval and disappointment over how she did all the wrong things and made all the wrong decisions.

She doesn't care anymore.

( history ) The Faus family comes from old money. Back in the mid- to late-1800s, their ancestors opened a little architectural firm. They dawdled along for a while, doing what they could for money, trying with all their might to work their way up to match the big guys. Unfortunately, they had to compete with guys like Burnham and Root, Hunt, and (in 1887) Gustave Eiffel. By the time the French erected the tower the Faus' firm had mild popularity along the east coast; they constructed homes in the wealthier end of town, and lived comfortably, but their fame was minimal in comparison to the States other assemblers. In fact, they were all but forgotten when Independent America announced their plan to "out Eiffel Eiffel" with a magnificent world's fair. Benjamin and Joseph Faus may not have gotten the fame they searched for in this time, but with all the big names being called in to Chicago to participate in the fair of the century, they were contracted by clients wanting larger complexes in their absence.

The fair, admittedly, was wonderful (they attended, of course, everyone did), but once it was over the Faus brothers had solidified a range of clients on the east coast, some were even writing to their distance family to tell of what a fabulous job they'd done. So after the fair they were rocketed from one state to another, they even found themselves over seas. Of course, their fame was again deterred by the capture of Mr. H. H. Holmes (America's first serial killer, essentially), but the trial was over soon enough. And his name faded away while their own shown. They were the Faus Brothers, and architects that had been working on the fair were dropping like flies... they had work. They hired a multitude of young, trending architects, and propelled themselves further into the world of fine building. They created many heavily visited sites still standing today, and their sons have carried on the business through the years, until it landed in the very capable hands of William Faus II, who is training his only son, Jacin, to take over the business once he is old enough (view spoiler).

Yvonne grew up as a daughter to the Faus legacy, and lived in luxury. Her life was easy, save for all the rules that she and her siblings were expected to follow. She fell into line behind Jacin, doing as she was told, but happy to find that the older she grew the more refined her opinion became and the more her father considered them. She's got a good brain in that head of hers, and her father allowed her a position in the firm when she was sixteen. Yvonne started out as a coffee runner; she did other things, too, like mail letters, or man the phones, and rarely sit in the staff meetings. She did the last more often as she got older, offering her thoughts when her father asked for her to. Turns out, she had a good eye for design. Which, as this is an architectural firm, is a great thing; Jacin, on the other hand, is better with finances. They're a pretty good team. Yvonne was offered enrollment to a variety of hard-to-get-into colleges (Oxford being one of them; England is a bit of a dream to her) but attended none of them. Instead, her father urged her to remain within the vicinity and take classes online. She also received lessons from him, and some of her co-workers. "Working at the firm is practice enough" he would always say. It was her mother that convinced him to let her continue with online classes, if only to get the degree that she required, and he consented. That being said, it was arranged for her and a boy named Nicholas McCarren to get married upon his return from active duty. Two things happened in the time between then and now: one, she and Nicholas grew to enjoy one another's company, which made it twice as hard to see him off; and two, Nicholas left, and came back a wreck. He struggles with nightmares, and is victim to extreme PTSD. Yvonne doesn't know how to handle it. She remembers the way he was before, and how she grew to love that person, and that is what keeps her holding on to him now. Not her father. Not her family. Not anything but that. But she doesn't know what to do. What to say. She can't calm him, or be there for him. All she can do is try -- and fail. It's not getting better, and she doesn't know if it ever will.
