Ian Coomber | 7 comments In order to educate myself in the ways of Classic Who I am wondering which DVD I should get next. I figured a good way to start would be with one DVD of each Doctor and currenty have 'The Beginning' boxset, 'The Invasion', 'Genesis of the Daleks', 'Earthshock', 'Survival' and the 1996 TV Movie, but am unsure as to which Jon Pertwee and Colin Baker stories I should get. Does anyone have any specific recomendations???

Mark C | 43 comments Colin Baker stories are difficult to choose from as his era was not the greatest. Colin himself is great and I'm very fond of the Sixth Doctor but I feel his best stories are in novels and audio.
But to get back to your question: Mark of the Rani is a good one to start with or possibly Vengeance on Varos. I'm also quite fond of Trial of a Time Lord but at 14 episodes its perhaps a bit too long for a first experience of the Sixth Doctor. Also the whole is not as great as the sum of its parts so it mmight be best holding off on that one.

For the Third Doctor I would probably suggest his debut in Spearhead from Space; Inferno, which is quite a dark story and unlike most of the Third Doctor's era; or Carnival of Monsters, which looks a little cheap in places but has an interesting story and some particularly good dialogue. The Green Death is another popular one although its not a personal favorite I must admit.

Hope that helps!

Definitely get Inferno. It's one of the best Who serials ever.

I'd also recommend The Time Warrior. A great medieval story that serves as the introduction for both the Sontarans and one of the most popular companions, Sarah Jane Smith.

Vengeance on Varos would be a good start for the 6th Doctor, arguably the best script and story they gave poor Colin for his TV run.

Myself, I'd stay well away from any story with the word 'Rani' in the title. I would suggest The Two Doctors instead. Colin teams up for Patrick Troughton for some fun with the Sontarans (Again? They must be my favorite baddies...). It's always neat to see a Who episode filmed outside the usual quarries and caves of the UK (this one was filmed in Spain).

Mary JL (maryjl) | 64 comments I have a question. Why does the BBc do two types of DVd issue--one ofr the Uk and one for the Us? I just saw on Amazon UK that two Jon Pertwee DVD's will be released as a set---Frontier in Space and Planet of the Daleks under the title "The Dalek War.

NO US release relase date given! Will this be release lated in the Region 1 US format?

(And while I am at it, Blake's Seven is not out in US Region format, either).)

Can one purchased a DVd platyer that will play both US and UK DVD's? How would one find one?

Ian Coomber | 7 comments I think it mainly hinges on the fact that the BBC as a whole is made up of lots of smaller and technically seperate companies, and so would involve lots more red tape with who is allowed the rights to what. Most DVDs of American shows take longer to be released in the UK, so it's nothing too unusual. I'm sure it will be released, just give it time.

And it is possible to get a DVD to play both. I have a UK DVD player that plays US DVD's. The best way to find one is search internet electronics stores for "Multi region DVD player" and see what results you get.

Mary JL (maryjl) | 64 comments Thanks, Ian! One Google search of "Multi-region Dvd" commencing!

Leela4 | 98 comments The reason "The Mark of the Rani" gets recommended a lot is it's one of only two stories in Colin Baker's era that has the old Doctor Who "feel". (The other being "Terror of the Vervoids" by the same authors, but that's complicated by the whole Trial of a Time Lord thing.)

I'm hard pressed to make a sixth Doctor recommendation myself.

As for the fifth Doctor, personally I'd kick "Earthshock" in favor of something else. But all the ones I'd recommend instead aren't out on DVD yet. So "Earthshock" it is.

Jas' | 8 comments If you're looking for a good Sixth Doctor DVD, buy revelation of the daleks. Absolutely brilliant.

Robert Wright (rhwright) | 74 comments Know this is an old thread, but feel like chiming in.

For Pertwee— The Sea Devils: you get classic Delgado Master and the Silurians (always a favorite of mine).

For CB— Attack of the Cybermen: agree his best stories are in other media, but this is a solid standalone. I like the Terror of the Vervoids section of season 23, but can't really recommend the overall Trial storyline.
