SOLVED. Future earth SF where only sentient toy animals are left [s]

I need help remembering a book I saw online about a year ago.
I believe it was set on a future earth where humanity is gone and only mechanical toy animals are left. I think these toy animals were sentient in some way.
Somehow I want to say the author was Dutch, or possibly from another central european country.
The cover was darkish and I think there were some of these toy animals in the cover image.

I'm going crazy searching for this book. Help is much much appreciated!
