Help with the name of a book

Please help....
This is going to be extremely vague but I need help in remembering the title of a book a read some years ago. All I remember is that the protagonist had a friend named Harp. I thought it was the Book of Words Trilogy by J V Jones but I don't think its that. I know its not much to go on.
