You may need to use the random approach to reading. Too many books available probably makes chaos of any organization you have, and any Author that sees you have their book on your Goodreads shelves will be perpetually disappointed as you fail to get to their books.
My best guess would be around 500, spread out over 4 sites online & at home. Too many? Never! I get a lot of them on here from other readers comments & suggestions. I find sites such as Amazon that "suggest" books based on what you've purchased & looked at to be less helpful. Not sure what algorithm they use......I recently purchased a gritty police procedural & was recommended a Hollywood star's biography & a cookbook. Huh?
I'm so busy writing that I pretty much given up trying to read. I wish I could read ALL of them! Mainly if I do read anything it's text books.Yes I am weird but that's the best advice I can give you. I agree with whoever said that authors will be disappointed if you don't read their books. Do you prefer any particular genre? You might reduce the amount of books that way.

My Goodreads to-read list is at 246 right now, but that's not even half of the books I really want to read. Plus I just joined bookbub and keep picking up freebies (while thinking 'I'm in the middle of too many books already, what on earth is this madness?!') I doubt I'll ever 'get through' my to-reads--with all the books published every year, all the old books needing discovering, not to mention re-reads and classics, there's a ton of books for the taking, and not enough time to enjoy them all. Still, it's a better problem than having too much time and nothing to read :)
About author disappointment for unfulfilled to-read 'promises', I think it's just a fact of authoring that for every hundred or so people who claim interest in your book, one or two might actually read it. Everyone is interested in more books that they can read, authors included, and I think most will understand that :)
Grace, I think half of the books on my to read list came from Bookbub! I am constantly picking up the freebies from there.
I know! It's crazy how many cool-looking ones are free there :D
I add any books I want to read some day to my Goodreads to read shelf, whether I have copies or not. The result is that I have 3866 on there at this moment in time. I do have copies of a few hundred of those, which are waiting for me to get around to reading them (some of which I got free, while others I just brought). I usually grab a book or two that's on my list of ones I want to read whenever I have the cash to do so, and randomly pick which to read next.Too many books? Some might say so. Personally, I don't think there's such a thing as too many books. I tell you what though... Even with my habit of reading a couple of hundred books a year, I'm not in any danger of running out of new books to read any time soon. ;)
Do you add them as you find something that piques your interest? It feels like I am adding one or two new books a day... and have no clue when I will get to them all....
How many is too many? Or is that even a possibility?
