At our meeting we discussed some of the profound lines of encouragement about life in general found within Oke's novel and the movie script. Personally, I found the depiction of the conflicts for an unarmed woman on the frontier (from wild animals to would-be suitors) compelling and enlightening.

Mildred I too found the teacher in this novel very courageous and able - life in that remote area is described well - the women on the frontier were expected to do much. However, in the end, it was almost a cop-out as after a year she fell in love with a Mountie and decided to follow him - again having a man taking care of her.

Her tenure as a teacher did feel really short-lived. I felt badly for the community who had wanted a teacher so much and had gotten a good one finally, only to lose her almost immediately.
