Hello everyone,

I'm taking a short vacation this weekend to Washington, D.C.

One of the things I plan to do is to go to the Library of Congress, which might have the most English language books in the world.

I hope I get a chance to read good but difficult to obtain books.
There are interesting suggestions in this thread and looking for some more.

There was an English translation of Kenji Nakagami's collection Snakelust in the late 90s but copies are very expensive now. There was another collection but Snakelust seems to be the superior one with more horror. Sounds like stories of squalor and demons.

I'd love to see an annotated edition of Charlotte Dacre's The Passions. It's so good, but all that is currently available is the out of print Arno Press edition.

I've just run across an interesting reference to an old book (mystery) written by Robert Service called House of Fear (1927). I would love to see this one in print at an affordable price.

I wonder if anyone can clear something up for me about Edward Montague's The Demon of Sicily. I was reading an Amazon review just now that mentioned this was only volume 1 (of 4). I can't find anyone else mentioning this, and I'm wondering if the reviewer accidentally posted about another edition. If not, is there a reason only the first volume was published, and is there a possibility of Valancourt publishing a new expanded edition with all four volumes? Apologies if this has already been addressed elsewhere - thanks!

I've looked at several of my favorite old book haunts and discovered that yes, it was originally published in 4 volumes in 1807. My understanding is that the Valancourt text comes from that edition.

I just looked at my copy, and it is indeed all 4 volumes put together in one book. You can tell because they've noted "end of volume x" in the appropriate spots.

My pleasure. Actually, that happened to me just recently. I ordered a British Library edition of a book called A Modern Sphinx by Ebenezer Rogers, only to discover it was volume 2! I had to go back and find the missing books. It is frustrating.

Yep, it's happened to me too - I remember being excited a few years ago bringing home volumes 1 and 2 of Dumas' Travel Impressions in Russia from a used book store only to find out it was a three-volume set. Still on the lookout for that elusive third volume...

And my goodness, A Modern Sphinx sounds great! At least from what little I can find out about it from some quick googling. Considering how hard it is to find, is this something Valancourt would consider publishing, perchance? ;)

Were you able to track down Cold Front? I recently read this one and think it is a polished horror novel worthy of some recognition. It's mean-spirited with slick, economical prose. It seems this is the only novel the author published which is a shame.

I know you don't publish much science fiction and probably even less in the traditional fantasy modes but some of these are very hard to find and I'm just going to try my luck.

Books 2, 3 and 4 of Terry Dowling's Rynosseros series are the most insanely expensive second hand books I've ever wanted. And the series started in the 90s.

The second book of Imaro by Charles R. Saunders is also extremely expensive.

Both would obviously require a publisher willing to publish a 4 volume series for each. If anyone knows any other publishers of science fiction and fantasy who might respond to my begging, please let me know.

I recently read Valancourt edition of Slimer and am half way through The Fungus. Is there any chance of Valancourt doing a run of Carnosaur? I'd love to compare the book to the movie, but the copies I've been able to find are pretty pricey.

We've been trying to get Carnosaur for a while but it doesn't look promising. :-/

In the past we've tried to get reprint rights for novelizations and screenplays but nothing ever came of it. The copyrights are usually owned by the movie production companies and the amount of money they want is insane (if you can even get them to respond). If you come across one that says the copyright belongs to the author and not the production company, let me know. Slightly more hope dealing with an author!

I definitely think there are a few obscure gems Valancourt should try to reprint.

One is Robert Coates' "The Heater of Darkness" which was last reprinted in 1959. Even that reprint goes for a minimum of 65 $, and then the next cheapest copy goes for over 500 $ !

There was supposedly a 2012 reprint for cheap but that's long gone.

The other one would be any of the fantastic novels of Victor Rousseau Emanuel aka "H.M.Egbert", but mosty I'd love to see a reprint of his 1924 "THE SEA DEMONS", which originally came out in magazine form back in 1916. There is a single cheap copy of that one, followed by 23-30 $ per copy of the Hyperion repting from the 70's, which is still a lot.

The Sea Demons was published in eBook form by Singularity & Co. in 2013.

Singularity & Co. now seems defunct. Their Facebook page hasn't been posted to since 2015 and their website is down, but the eBook is still available for $4.99 on Kobo:
