ABANDONED. A man is about to beg, falls down unconscious, finds himself in a hospital

I read a novel almost two decades back.

A couple of things I remember from that novel :

At one point is the protagonist's life, he will be about to beg. But, couldn't bring himself to. He falls unconscious and finds himself in a hospital. One of his friends would recognize him in the hospital. I think she is a doctor and they would have been friends during childhood.

He would have kissed her, when they where young and would have fallen for him.


It might be a Harold Robbins novel, not sure.

Any pointers would help.
