Classics Group Read (Post 1900) - May 2016. The Crying of Lot 49. SPOILERS ALLOWED

I did not like this one, the only saving grace is that it was short.
I didn't really feel like I got to know any of the main characters in any depth and so I didn't notice them develop. My biggest problem was the style of writing, which didn't appeal to me at all and so I think it is unlikely I will read anything else by the author.

I have tried a few times to read this, and I haven't gotten very far. I should just finish it so I can comment with some clarity.: )

I didn't really like this, although it had an interesting premise. The characters don't really develop, apart from Oedipa they just come and go, and they are not really intended to be realistic. It feels very dated, although I would imagine it was quite original and even shocking when it was first written, and the satire didn't work for me.

This was my first Thomas Pynchon book and I really wanted to like it...but didn't really. Although I admit some parts were funny, others were so dreadfully dull (like the description of the play!!)

So what did you think? Was it all a rich man's game, arrangements made before his demise to draw Oedipa in? Or was it an ancient secret she was unearthing?

At least the title was explained at the end; I was wondering what it meant. Two stars from me, a rating I seldom give a book.

I hate to admit this, but I gave up on this book. It just didn't hold my interest.

Who would have thought such a short book could feel so long.
There were passages that kept making me think, "I think I'm going to like this book from now on" but they were few and far between, although I did laugh at the part about the ex-post master asking for people to write to him if they'd committed suicide (which sounds totally wrong).
