Sarah Schmidt | 14 comments Book cover had a boy with his back to the viewer standing in a green boat going down a nice, serene looking swamp and a heron bird.

I remember the book being a bit mystical and focusing on something special about the heron and the swamp. The boy would take his boat out in the swamp all the time. Most likely took place somewhere in Asia. Unfortunately, I don't remember much else about the book besides this and the cover.

When did you read this? Was it children's, YA, adult?

Over 10 years ago, I'm not sure when. Maybe YA or children's. I don't remember enough of the book to know for sure.

Hillary | 270 comments Was the setting Asia, or was the boy Asian? Do you remember anything about the language that placed it in time, like references to historical events? Or references to something like food or technology that would give it a time frame?

The River at Green Knowe has many different editions, but a lot of the covers have a child or children in a canoe on a mysterious river. One of the children in the story is Ping who is Chinese, but the book is set in England. That one came to mind, based on the cover.

Yes, I think he was an Asian boy in Asia somewhere. It seemed like it took place a long time ago, or at least in a place with very little technology.

That book you mention might be it, but I will have to read it and see if it jogs my memory. I don't remember any other characters being in the story besides the main character, and I don't remember it taking place in any Western countries. Maybe animals like herons or cranes. There seemed to be something important about a crane, like a legend or myth or something.
