Cries in the Night (Denver Heroes, #2) by Kathy Clark
Roll 5: 2 + 6 ==> 8
Space Landed: Community Chest - Rolled 11
Task: Pay the Hospital - Read a book that takes place in a hospital or where someone goes to the hospital.
Book: Cries in the Night - Kathy Clark
How it fits: h is works as a Victim's Advocate and she is often at the hospital with them. H is a firefighter and an explosion sent him to the ER.
Read: 05.21
Rating: ★★★1/2
Review:
I have mixed feelings about this one. The heroine truly was a heroine as she is a Victim's Advocate and the descriptions of all that she did to help crime victims was amazing. A bulk of this, of course, was helping abused women and we felt her helplessness when she ended up visiting the same women over and over again. But she never gave up. We understand why, later, she has such empathy for these victims. There was a lot of focus in this book on her job but the romance, and the conflict to it, was woven throughout. My mixed feelings came from how long it took for the story to really get going. There was a lot of ground being laid in the first several chapters with action for both MCs, but the interaction between them was slow to start. So while I enjoyed reading about Julie's work, I was anxious for their story to get started.

The critical scene took me by surprise, which is a good thing. We were led to a certain suspect even though obvious, but the author did a great job of making it the obvious be the only logical suspect, so in the end, I was taken by surprise. So a little slow moving on the romance part, but the suspense story line was very good.

Definitely Dead (Sookie Stackhouse, #6) by Charlaine Harris
Definitely Dead by Charlaine Harris
Date Read: 22/05/2016
Rating: 4☆
Review:

This is the 6th installment in the Sookie Stackhouse series and as usual someone is out to get her. This follows on a few weeks from the pack leadership contest where she met the handsome Quinn, and their will they won't they plays a bif part of the story. Sookie learns a bit more about herself and the supes around her, which leaves her hurting and in shock, leading her to re-evaluate her relationships. There is a short story that precedes this book and I do feel I would have benefited from having read it.

Books read:
1. Loki's Daughters by Delle Jacobs (tagged Stand-alone on page 1)
Review: A wonderful historical romance - lusty Vikings that only want to help and distrusting and warlike Celtic maidens who don't want Vikings in their lives - lots of misunderstandings, laughter and edge of seat scary moments - because yes there are baddies!!!

2. The Buddha in the Attic by Julie Otsuka (tagged stand-alone pg 9)
Review - I am not fond of books that are written in a Greek Chorus sort of fashion - where the masses tell their story all at once. I have read a few books like this and they are all a struggle to stay focussed.

Instead of following a single character from leaving Japan - arriving in the US and marrying a man she has never met - having his children and then how they are treated when WWII breaks out.

The reader in instead told the stories of the whole boatload of women all at once - this one, that one, those ones, these ones and then those other ones.
How it fits: Both Tagged stand-alone
Date finished the last one: 22/05/16

Ratings:
1. 5★’s
2. 3★’s

Now if Cassie hasn't claimed Pacific Avenue - I think it might be mine? If not can move on with only 2 read as wasn't owned when I arrived

Review: Although this was a good book and well researched historical fiction, I was so turned off by the character of Charles Lindberg that I found it hard going. He wasn't a very nice person at all and I found it hard to get invested in him and his life.

Nancy (nancyhelen) | 386 comments I'm rolling now, although it is only my 3rd roll, so I reckon I could probably ignore the Monday rule for a week or so as I'm so behind.

Roll #3: 4 + 6 = 10

Starting at St Charles Place, this gets me to Kentucky Avenue - 2011 Shelf - Must read 1 book to own. Must read 3 books if the property is owned.

It's owned by Cassie, the property mogul, who is demanding 3 books of me. See you all in a while then...

message 217: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (nancyhelen) | 386 comments Just a couple of questions - if I'm looking for a book, does it have to be on the list, or is it OK if it has the tag.

So for instance, Demon Possession (Shadow Quest, #1) by Kiersten Fay is tagged 2011 by 7 people and it is on the first page of tags, but it isn't on the actual list because that cuts off at 17 people tagging a book. I guess it is because not as many people have read it.

Also, looking at the game rules, apparently the game is over when all of the properties are owned. As there are about half a million of us, that is probably going to happen within the first tour around the board. I don't know about you guys, but do you reckon we should figure out a different way to win so we can play on, or do we leave it at that? Or has this problem already been dealt with and I need to go back to my cosy rock to hide under?

I can't see where it says we have to do a review. In fact I can't even see an example of how we set out our completion post.

I've updated my post to include a review though - to be on the safe side. Am off to bed soon will research this :)

message 223: by CassieV (new)

I had one that was cut off the list, too, and they said it was fine as long as the tag is there.

I don't think we've discussed alternate ways to win. I'm open to suggestions, though :)

Space: Pacific Avenue
Shelf: Stand Alone

Book #1
London by Edward Rutherfurd
5/15/16
2 stars
Tagged 3 times as Stand Alone
Review: I read this after reading Rutherfurd's Paris, and was incredibly let down by it. London plods along and follows a few families down through the ages to present day. Each chapter is at least 30% history and how the city has changed, then we have a good 20% where we are updated on how the families are doing, leaving half or less of the entire book being about the people themselves.

Rutherfurd obviously loves London and all it's history, but this read too much like a history textbook for me to enjoy it much.

Book #2
Steel by Carrie Vaughn
5/26/16
3 stars
Tagged 21 times as Stand Alone
Review: This was a story about a semi-professional fencer who, after losing an important tournament, finds an old piece of a pirate's rapier that sends her back in time. Yes, it was a bit weird :). The main character learns some good lessons, though, and the story overall is sweet, even if it's not the best I've ever read. A bit too generic, too short, not enough story in my story, if you get my drift!

I mean we are 'fighting' each other so if the fast readers get around and buy up all the properties the game finishes and the one with the most wins :)

Review: I realised that the first time I read this was shortly before its release in 1997 when the Australian publisher asked me if I would like to read a 'rather good' book from a first time author – I said yes and became one of the first in the world to be swept into the phenomenon that became Pottermania. Anyhow, I felt it was time to re-read it and am falling love once more with this boy as he sets out on the path to his destiny.

The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman
Learning to Feel by N.R. Walker - this one is a M/M romance - will be my first and a few snakey ladies recommended this as a book to get started in that genre.
