The Farmstead-Those Who Have Read Both Books

I have read The Passage and The Twelve multiple times and one thing that drives me nuts is who saves Theo in the barn at The Farmstead? Any ideas?

Olson Hand was left alive and wandered off, could have been him but I doubt he would have helped at that point. The other thing I was thinking, they keep referencing the feeling of a ghost, perhaps the ghost of Demo Jaxon (long shot)? My last theory is Wolgast, well Viral Wolgast.

I just don't buy the theory that it was Theo who saved himself, Maus and the baby.

Thoughts?

I feel like I might have missed something or at least hoping for something to be revealed in City of Mirrors, I want to know more about The Farmstead.

I am certain Theo did not save himself. I have read the barn scene lots trying to figure it out but am no closer to a solution. I can not wait to discover who it was!

Do we get an answer about why Amy is so connected to animals?

I don't think its necessary to answer all questions like this. Sometimes a little bit of mystery adds more to the atmosphere of a book (or movie or series, etc). Not that you want red herrings swimming around all over the place.

But I like the unexplained mystic experiences Lacey has in the fields outside her village, and later at the compound, and the experiences Amy has at the zoo and at the town carnival.

They just are. Explaining them too much would take away from the tone of the book. And without that tone, and without the themes or courage, love, redemption, protection of children, and sacrifice, this is just another vamp book.

Hi John, not sure if your comment is in response to the original question or the one about the animals, but I would love an explanation to the barn incident and excited to get one.

However, I do agree with you if you're talking about the mystery surrounding the animals in the zoo. Amy is special, period, and I love that about this series. Something exists because it is so in this universe, she is chosen, I love it!

Having just finished re-reading the book, I now think it was Wolgast. I like to think there was just enough of humanity left in him to watch over those who needed protection.

Either that or Carter. But I'll have to wait until I re-read The Twelve. I'm not sure when he locked himself away.

Could it be the viral who had lived there before he was turned? The one who'd had to bury his wife and children?

We don't know for sure that he went viral, but it could well be.

My personal favourites are Theo and Maus' son and good old-fashioned divine intervention (especially given the persistent biblical parallels in these books).

Sorry for the super late response. After reading City of Mirrors, I still didn't get a definitive answer on who saves Theo and his family. I disagree with some on here that point out it was Walgast. He only had a connection to Amy. There would have been no reason to be following Theo. He had never even met them. I will continue to think it was Demo, until proven otherwise.
