I was actually caught off guard at first by Kate's devotion to Julie. It helped me to understand Kate better through their relationship and for that reason thought it was very important to the storyline. Julie will end up grounding her, giving her some sense of purpose.
I really liked Julie and loved the voice of her in the narration. I think it made the book more magical and come to life. I loved how she tried to save her and her responsibility towards her. She treated Julie as a mother since Julie's mother ended up dying. I agree that she was very devoted especially trying to find her mother. Great to hear that Julie will be in other books. I really liked her.
