Brandy (romansgirl) | 87 comments I finished one book in March. Just one. I started a couple for the tag. Rebecca, which I didn't get past the first 2 chapters because of, well, life. And I started In The Woods by Tana French on audio. I haven't finished it yet because its 18 disks and I'm not working as many days so I don't have as much commute time. I've lost my reading groove/rhythm and I'm trying really hard to get it back.

Red52 I feel your pain. I really do. I have stopped and started more books in the last two years than I ever have before. I'll download samples and think I'd finish that, only to abandon it think I'll come back to it later. I have recently started thinking that my reading tastes are in the process of changing and what use to be a satisfying read no longer is and what is satisfying is not exactly clear to me yet.

I've definitely been there, in that genre transition. PBT really helped with that.

So interesting.

I never really thought of that development as a reader, but when I look back in hindsight, I totally do see it!

I'm sorry. I'm kind of in the same boat. I read 50 books years (the most I've ever read in a year) and this year I've only finished 5. I just can't seem to sit down and read. Good luck with your slump.

Jennifer Pope (jenjunum) | 902 comments I go through periods like this. I usually pick up a short quick read. Like the book equivalent of a romantic comedy. One or two of those then I'm usually ready for something more serious.

message 7: by Susie (new)

Susie I agree Jennifer. Something that's the equivalent of Gone Girl or Before I Go to Sleep - a page turning thriller - generally does it for me.

Elizabeth (Alaska) What was the last book that you really liked? Do you want another like that one? Go to the book page and look at the Readers Also Enjoyed section on the book page and see if there is something there that strikes your fancy.

OR ...

you may be ready to find something a little meatier, something to sink your teeth into. What book have you enjoyed that was maybe a little more challenging? Again, go the book page and look at the Readers Also Enjoyed section.

Karin | 9248 comments I've been through a few reading slumps in the past few years. Sometimes I just have to ride it out. Sometimes switching around what I'm reading helps. I get tired of reading certain things in novels after a while.

The other thing is that I don't like all of the same kinds of books I did when I was younger.

Sometimes reading what I call fluff (some people call brain candy) or light reading, or shorter books helps.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1532 comments Yeah --- I was going gang-busters this year, averaging 10 books/month so far until April. I've only finished one so far :-(

message 11: by Hope (new)

Hope | 150 comments I only finished one in March as well. I still have the excuse of being a new mom. That works for at least the first year, right? But it's frustrating. I definetly second the advice of picking up a page turner. Some kinds of books are like book candy to me - not very nourishing but addictive and fun to read! Of course if what you like is changing, its normal to have to test around a bit to find what grabs your attention again.

message 12: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Pope (jenjunum) | 902 comments Omg, Hope! I didn't read more than 10 books/year until last year. My oldest was 6/7 and my youngest was 5/6. And I did read much of anything that wasn't about babies, parenting, breastfeeding, etc.

message 13: by Susie (new)

Susie Hope, I joined a book club after the my first child was born so that I would read at least one book a month, but he was at least one!

That depends on you, your specific child, your life as a whole and whether or not you ever have more. But, as your child is older, feel free to count any read aloud y/a novels in our book count or any read alouds that will work for a challenge.

Just don't compare yourself to any other mother, because it's not a competition :).

Susie Karin, your always have wonderful advice. :-)

When my son was born he was an easy baby, so I could read parenting books along with some science fiction. But when my twins came along a year later, I barely had time to read the ingredients of a cereal box. For two or three years the only books I read were board books. If Goodreads had been around then, the books on my shelf would have titles like "Trucks" or "One, Two, Three!"

message 18: by Denizen (new)

Denizen (den13) | 1138 comments I almost always finish a book which is at times frustrating because those are the books that take the longest to read even when they are relatively short. I tend to shake things up, however, and find that helps keep things fresh and interesting. I like to go to different places and time periods, switch around authors and genres.

I skim reviews until after I've read the book to keep the story line fresh and avoid setting expectations that aren't accurate. Predetermined opinions are a reader's biggest enemy IMO. I'll jettison a favorite author after a dud or two and don't give a hoot who the publisher is.

Brandy (romansgirl) | 87 comments I'm now in a Goodreads slump. This is my first comment/post in like 3 weeks. My husband got hurt at work and had surgery and can't drive and baseball season is in full swing. ....2 boys, 3 teams, 6 games a week.

message 20: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Pope (jenjunum) | 902 comments Sounds like you need a break! Or an audiobook in one ear during all those games?

I'm jealous you get to watch your boys play baseball. I completely miss it!!

But I am sorry about the reading slump. I've really slowed down since baseball season started too, but the Yankees are doing so poorly that I may end up reading again soon.

Or watching the rip roaring Orioles (the Baltimore team where I actually live).

Oh, and I hope your husband recuperates quickly! That sounds pretty exhausting!

message 23: by Karin (new)

Karin | 9248 comments Well, I have been spending time on Goodreads instead of gardening, since it's my down time right now. Today, though, I went and bought the organic lettuce plants I should have sown from the seed I saved last year and a few other plants, although not all organic. I went all the way to Hope, RI to find organic plants, but they don't start berry bushes on their own. I was already going half way there, anyway; my middle daughter takes flute lessons out of state (let me state that I don't live that far from that postage sized state, which, in Pawtucket at the very least, is called Rho-DIE-land. Not that we go to Pawtucket for music lessons, though.

Susie The geographic location of all of the members here fascinates me. I have experienced, in print, TV and film, many of the places mentioned. Isn't the Internet a wonderful thing?
