Old book set in a small town: the guy thought he is in love with this girl who died, married heroine, basically a bastard to her (told her he'll never love her, that she'll never measure up to his dead sweetheart) and the heroine is an angel who puts up with it.

they lost a baby and then the 'dead sweetheart' came back and the hero practically threw himself at her. Heroine asked for divorce and went away while the hero realized he was inlove with heroine.

His best fried proposed to heroine and he was extremely jealous- some major groveling and drama at the end where he beats himself for letting of her go.

However, like every stupid heroine out there, she forgives him and said yes when he proposed breaking his best friends heart whose proposal was sabotaged by the hero (kidnaps the heroine)
