Michael Connick I'd like to introduce you to my new espionage novel: "Trapped in a Hall of Mirrors". Set in the period from 1968 until 1982, the novel follows its protagonist, Stephen Connor, during his early career within the intelligence community. At first employed at the NSA in a technical role his success there leads to an unexpected transfer to the CIA. Still working in a technical position, he nevertheless connives to get himself an oversea assignment in Iran working with the Shah's notorious secret police organization: the SAVAK. While in Iran he is for the first time drawn into an actual covert intelligence operation against the KGB. Success in his Iranian assignment leads to a posting to Vienna, Austria: the spy capitol of Europe. There Stephen stumbles into a KGB operation that has placed a mole inside Austria's counter-intelligence organization: the STAPO. After that, things spin quickly out of control and Stephen finds himself entangled with an East German seductress while becoming the target of a psychopathic killer.

I based this novel on real life experiences. Like my protagonist, I was born in San Francisco, consulted with the SAVAK in pre-revolutionary Iran, and lived and worked in Vienna, Austria. Today, I reside in Huntington, WV, after a life spent living and traveling all over the US, Europe, and the Middle East.

Below are links to the book and sources of further information about it, including a television news interview:

Jack (jackjuly) | 145 comments True story, my father worked for a company called Technical Fabricators in 1979. They built desalination units to make fresh water. Being a Nam vet he felt something was wrong in the country and got out two days before the kidnapping of our citizens. He was living in the Shahs sisters house. He had some really interesting stories.

I left Iran just six months before the Shah fell. The day I left Tehran was the first day of really violent demonstrations in that city and I had some trouble getting to the airport. I actually included a little of that detail in the novel. Actually the whole section of the novel that takes place in Iran is really quite autobiographical.
