I haven't read Kafka on the Shore yet, but your description of it reminds me of how I felt about the novels of his that I have read. They are beautiful in a serene way.

"The Moon and the Yew Tree" is one of my favorites from that book too - so haunting, beautiful, and sad! It's one of the more controlled poems in the book too. I love how it unfolds line by line. Toward the end, the saints floating over the cold pews give me chills every time, and there's such power in that strange, wild moon.

I've only read one by Murakami (Kafka on the Shore), but I found it fascinating: psychology, mythology, philosophy .. lots going on and beautifully written too!
And Plath was an amazing talent. With the benefit of hindsight, some of the poems in Ariel are haunting, but there's no denying its raw power.
