Sci-fi story in space on a ship or spacestation (I think...). People are looking for a device/key that is hidden in plain sight because it has been turned inside out. Probably read the book 1975-1985. Trying to track down title for research. I can't remember more of the plot. Thanks!

Any idea what the key/device is for? Or why they need to find it?
I have read so many books that the details merge together... I believe they were stuck where they were until they could locate the device/key. Anything else would be pure conjecture. Thanks!
This is "The Big Time" The Big Time by Fritz Leiber - they are looking for a device called "The Major Maintainer". P.S. It wasn't quite a space station. It was a rest-and-recuperation station for time-war soldiers, maintained (somehow) outside time and space.
