I shall be very interested to see what you make of it, David. I also wrote up the Tarleton murders in my pre-Watson collection.Out of interest, who tells the story in your version? I had Holmes relating the story to Watson.
The great majority of it is a conversation between Holmes and his visitor although the only dialogue we 'hear' is that from Holmes.
Yes, the problem with the Holmes-to-Watson format is quotes within quotes within quotes. In the case of Ricoletti and his abominable wife, I had things like: " ' "Why, I would sooner marry that cripple there!" she shrieked, pointing at me.
" ' "And so you shall," her father said to her. Whereupon, before either she or I could fully grasp the situation, we were married within the week, and her father had bought the restaurant where I was working, and presented it to us as a wedding gift. I do not know how he achieved his goal, but he forced Bianca to work in the kitchen, where she transpired to have a real gift as a cook, as you, Signor Holmes, can testify.
Hugh's comment spurred me to check the database. There are 7 attempts to tell that tale listed:1. Tale #1 in Hugh Ashton's "Without My Boswell.
2.
2. Tale #1 in Ian Charnock's "Elementary cases of SH."3. Susan Dahlenger's "The Adventure of Violet Tarleton.
4. Tale #9 in Wm. E Dudley's "Untold Sherlock Holmes."
5. Jack Grochot told it in SH Mystery Magazine (Vol 4, #2, 9-10/2013.
6. Tale #8 in D. L Hammer's "My Dear Holmes(Hammer Anth #3)"
7 Tale #12 in Alvin Rymsha's "SH: The Lost Cases."
