Beyond Watson is a new anthology of Sherlock Holmes stories set to be released in June. The twist is, as you may have guessed, Watson is not involved in these stories. I was fortunate enough to be invited to contribute a piece to the collection, 'The Tarleton Affair'. For the latest news, hit the link: https://www.goodreads.com/author_blog...

Hugh Ashton | 3 comments I shall be very interested to see what you make of it, David. I also wrote up the Tarleton murders in my pre-Watson collection.
Out of interest, who tells the story in your version? I had Holmes relating the story to Watson.

The great majority of it is a conversation between Holmes and his visitor although the only dialogue we 'hear' is that from Holmes.

Hugh Ashton | 3 comments Yes, the problem with the Holmes-to-Watson format is quotes within quotes within quotes. In the case of Ricoletti and his abominable wife, I had things like:
" ' "Why, I would sooner marry that cripple there!" she shrieked, pointing at me.
" ' "And so you shall," her father said to her. Whereupon, before either she or I could fully grasp the situation, we were married within the week, and her father had bought the restaurant where I was working, and presented it to us as a wedding gift. I do not know how he achieved his goal, but he forced Bianca to work in the kitchen, where she transpired to have a real gift as a cook, as you, Signor Holmes, can testify.

Pamela | 23 comments I have read quite a few stories where even the good doctor solved a few cases. I love Watson, but the snarky comments, and dry Witt, and pure brilliance of Holmes, although he does not do that well in social graces, but he puts the thrill in the stories.
