I read a book in the past year or so about a boy and girl who grew up together and dated until he accidentally injured her and then he became a priest. Later the priest is visited by a woman who was being abused and fakes her own death to get away from her husband, framing the priest who is falsely accused of her murder. The woman's daughter visits the priest in prison and later finds out her mother is alive and develops a relationship with the priest's childhood girlfriend.

Where and when is it set? Author male or female? Cover art?

I think the author was female but don't remember cover art at all, only plot. The present day story was current but the story started when the main people were children so probably 70s/80s. East coast I think. Story was told in varying viewpoints by the different characters.
