Good question Brian. I have not done a raffle myself, but I've wondered the same thing.
As far as promotions go, it's pretty low-risk to reward one order out of, say, 50 with a prize that's worth the same amount as royalties from 5-7 books (assuming your prize is $50). I wouldn't lean on that as THE means of getting people to bite on a purchase, but as a tactic on top of other tactics, it can't hurt if handled professionally.
I'm toying with the idea of making special bookmarks and slipping them into random books when it comes time to sign them.It's been a long time since I picked up my tatting shuttle, though, and somehow tatted lace bookmarks don't scream "WW1 Army veterans", do they?
I did a raffle during the contest I was involved in. Did it have any effect? I really don't think so. I was happy to do it though and felt like it was a small way to thank the people who supported me (beyond getting to read my book of course!).The larger prizes I've seen listed lately linked to referrals are an interesting idea though. That's ultimately what you want - to give people an incentive to push your book beyond your immediate network.
I've started doing a raffle for a blanket with my cover art embroidered on it every 50 orders. I don't really know if it's had an effect for the orders but it's gives me something more to put in updates rather then "things are going good". I have fun with it. the cons you could run across it shipping cost. The way I combated that was to get a better prize to give away less often.
The bookmark thing is good to for getting to word out with people around your work and home. It's less likely they'll throw away a bookmark because it's also useful. It's gotten me some orders from people I work with.
