This week, Choose Your Own Adventure is back!

Did you read Choose Your Own Adventure books as a kid (or as an adult... hey, why not)? Was there a series or author that that stuck with you? And did you cheat your way through like the rest of us (backtracking in order not to die some bizarre death)?

The Lady Anna (theladyanna) | 48 comments I read them and loved them in elementary school but for the life of me cannot even remember what they were

Albie (albie_miranda) | 21 comments I read a bunch of them when I was a kid. I actually read the space vampire one that got reviewed on the show. My favorite was one titled The Vampire Express. I remember the illustrations in it being really creepy. Oh, and I TOTALLY cheated when I read them. I would keep a finger between the pages whenever I had to make a choice that seemed particularly risky.

Nina Pantelic | 3 comments I remember having a couple of Choose Your Own Adventure books (not of the official canon, but the style) with Disney characters (one was the Jungle Book). Whenever I lost I would have to go back to the beginning until I reached a happy end.

Christina (cjcourt) | 6 comments Read them. Adored them. Wonder if my kids will enjoy them or if they're too dated.

I still remember accidentally losing the library's copy of The Vampire Express! It was a small library and the only copy and I never found out all the endings. *sob*

Kelly (sweetpea626) | 19 comments omg yes. Yes yes yes. My aunt and grandma would gift me them when I was a kid - our library didn't carry them. @ Christina, Maybe someone will be able to do updated versions? I can't see why some of them couldn't be more on the timeless side as well, such as the ones dealing with space travel.

message 8: by Ricki (new)

Ricki Ward | 3 comments Way back in the day, there was nothing better than tagging along with my dad to Waldenbooks. He would always let me pick out a new book, and that new book was always an Encyclopedia Brown, Babysitter's Club, or Choose Your Own Adventure. The only one that sticks out in my mind these days is #71 Space Vampire. I look for a copy for my own daughter every time I visit my local used bookstore, but haven't found it yet. It's my holy grail.

Jules (julieg67) | 5 comments Growing up, I would roll my eyes and sneer at these books. Condescendingly I would point out that they're gimmicky games that only people who never read anything else would appreciate. Yes I was insufferable. Thanks to Overdue, though, Karma has had its revenge; seeing their latest CYOA review drop while at the gym, I laughed aloud with joy, earning me several sneering and condescending responses from all those around me. :-) Thanks Overdue!

message 10: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (seriousrachel) | 4 comments I read "Escape from Chimney Rock"--at least I think that's the title--in 3rd grade. What I remember is the cover: an old granny type woman reaching out to snatch the young protagonist(s), a black cat, and the shadow of Chimney Rock looming in the background. Those of you who grew up in the early 90's will remember that Chimney Rock also figured prominently in the Oregon Trail computer game. ~synchronicity~
