Andre Brun (ABrun) | 54 comments Hi Guys

Is having a website a necessity for authors ?

Joni Dee | 49 comments I think so... not compulsory but if u want to reach people who are not that internet savvy - your book page on Inkshares can be a complicated one for some.
Plus, i had requests from people to read my teaser chapters on a plane or the tube, where u don't get internet connection, so i made a PDF and uploaded it there.
I think it would boost your exposure...

you can check out my "light" website at www.jondbooks.com, pretty easily built with wordpress... happy to help u get the basics if u needed.

Bekki Leber (primaimperatrix) I don't think you need a "real" website until you get some traction. I use my Inkshares page for my books as my website for right now.

If you do feel like you need one, I don't think it has to be super complex- just your contact info/social media, some personal info for your readers, a list of any works finished or in progress, and links to any other media you have like trailers.

Until you need that, I think you could probably just get away with a Twitter and/or Facebook, or maybe a Tumblr or whatever social media you use.

Elan (bonbonelan) There are lots of free and easy-to-use services out there that'll make having a website a bit less daunting.

Wordpress is a great blog platform, but if you want a simple aggregator, About and Flavors are great (and pretty) ways of collecting your presence in a single location online.

Let me know if you have any questions, as I've used tons of different options.

Kirsty Jennings (kirstyj78) | 33 comments Another easy one is Blogger.com by google. I created my blog www.fantasyscifiwriter.blogspot.co.uk using blogger. Its easy and quick to learn and also a great starter before you feel the need to expand and explore more options.

Andre Brun (ABrun) | 54 comments great

thank you guys , will look these options tonight and let you know :)

message 7: by E.K (new)

E.K Jacobs Yeah. Although a website may help you, it isn't a necessity. If you want to share your work online, then a website sure does do the trick. I used wordpress.com to get my work out there, but there are tons of other good websites (and Elan wrote a lot of them) to use.

Billy O’Keefe (billyok) | 77 comments For me, a website has been invaluable as a bridge between my pitch and Inkshares' website. The project page on Inkshares combines everything including the payment options into one page, and I'm glad it does, but that can be jarring for some folks to experience all at once. This gives them a little cushion in between.

Kirsty Jennings (kirstyj78) | 33 comments Hi guys,

Has anyone thought to perhaps create a blog of some kind dedicated to the Inkshares authors, Inkshares and helping to advertise authors books under one blog?

I'm not sure whether this can be done, but for people like me who like in the UK, its hard trying to get people to buy from the Inkshares website when their from outside the US.

It was just a thought but I wanted to hear what others thought before hand.

Andre Brun (ABrun) | 54 comments Kirsty,

I am working on a little project where we can promote the Quill Collection on Inkshares , and maybe other Inkshares book aswell.

will post my development on this shortly

Kirsty Jennings (kirstyj78) | 33 comments Great! My book hasn't made it to quill yet (still 140 days left) but as you say if its also to help other fellow authors to promote their work then that's fab!

Keep us posted!

Amanda Orneck (amandaorneck) On the side of websites being important:

Once you write a book, your goal is to build a brand and platform. That brand helps people identify what you sell and how they can get what you sell. As such you are now a business owner, and every business needs even just a basic brochure site that gets people to where they can buy your thing.

At the writer's conference I went to this month all the authors on the panels confirmed that websites are important to authors. At the start it's about getting search strength for your name (if it's unique) and for your book title, especially if it is close to another book's title. For example, with my first book, Shadow of the Owl, I was up against another more established book for the Google placement on that search string. It was only after building a website, connecting with Inkshares and Youtube, that I started to gain traction on searches for my book title. Top billing for the search still goes to a rather famous painting, but I am up there at number 2 after a year of work and exposure.

But mostly, the website is about getting visitors to buy your book. You have to make it easy for someone who is interested enough to search you up to then find you and your book. A dot com address is the best way to accomplish that, one that has links to where people can get your book, and to sign up for your email newsletter.

I agree with Amanda 1000000% .. well at least a 100%
i use my website not only to refer to Inkshares and to give info, but also as a base to my PDF preview which i pitch to just about anyone, whether in goodreads or not.

I had at least 50 downloads to this PDF excerpt, and while not staggering in number it helped bring in at least 6 orders already. Ok, admittedly that is a lame figure, but if u look at the success rate of 18% (6/33 with 20 left to follow up) u can see that this has potential yet.

I could not get these 6+20 prospects without a website.
and if i could duplicare myself and add more hours to the day - i'd get even more :D
