W Siddiq Salik was a wonderful writer whose life was tragically cut short.Best known for Witness to Surrender (an account of the fall of Dacca),Salik's other works include Salute (autobiography),Haman Yaaran Dozakh (captivity in India as a prisoner of war) and a couple of novels and a travelogue. His writing could be witty as well as poignant.

W Witness to Surrender (published in Urdu as Main Ne Dhaka Doobtay Dekha) is a haunting book. The author worked with Generals Yaqub Khan,Tikka Khan and Niazi. The book highlights the enormity and hopelessness of the task facing the Pakistani troops as they faced a hostile local population and a much larger, far better equipped enemy force. It is also a stinging indictment of the failures of the high command. The

description of the surrender ceremony is particularly poignant.
