Towards the end of chapter 2 and the beginning of 3 Alex Sawyer attempts to escape the Furnace. To stop him they try to burn him alive. He's dead and they are trying to bring him back to life to make him like the people who are holding him prisoner.

Who is trying to bring him alive again? How would they accomplish this? Is the main character in some type of hell? Also I was wondering if it explained how the main character ended up there in the first place.
