Groovy Lee Micah, I know exactly what you're going through. All of us as authors can identify. You will find that reviews are few and far between. And it takes a lot of time and hard work to get the ones we have. It has been my experience that, especially in giveaways, out of the 30 books an author will send out free, or even sell, they'll get maybe 3 reviews in return. Bloggers are very busy and inundated, but if you manage to get one interested, they will keep their word and give you a review.

**Hugss** and hang in there.

I read this very encouraging article from the Kindle newsletter about our journey as authors. And in case any of you haven't read it yet, I've included the link:

Thanks so much for the article :) I'll definitely give it a read!

T.L. Clark (tlcauthor) | 727 comments Aww Micah, welcome to the club.
Yes, the indie author life is challenging. Time is precious and we try to squeeze in writing AND promoting.
Do not expect anything. Just be happy with each book sold.
There are websites that you can see who revuew your genre and how they like to receive your request.
It's a long hard slog.

Amie O'Brien | 280 comments Darren Hardy has this saying (and I have definitely learned to believe it)...

"Success is hard frigging work!"

I actually enjoy most of the activities I do to share my book with the world. I love the creative part of designing ads and even the analytics of targeting them. I enjoy people so the social media aspect is fun (mostly). I've even decided blogging isn't as hard as I thought it would be.

But I really look forward to some of the things to come...book signings, romance conference booths, oh my dear Lord, I want my first book club!!! So these are the thoughts I use to push me forward through the smaller things. Enough small actions will lead to them.

Every time I get paid from BookBaby I invest it all back into marketing. I remember a time when it was being prepped for publishing that we looked at bigger houses or I allowed myself to dream a little on Trip Advisor. But yeah...I don't think that will be the case for quite a while. But I do have faith that one day they will sell far more freely!

Amie O'Brien | 280 comments Oh...and I totally forgot to post this yesterday!

So I keep most of my wardrobe (shoes and clothes) along a wall in my basement laundry room. There is also a fire extinguisher in that area. Apparently the other day while looking for some stuff, my hubby brought it down from a shelf and left it at eye level. Guess what our little boy did yesterday!!!!

Bree Verity (breeverity) Throwing out hugs to everyone who needs them over Christmas/New Year period. This time of year can be hard for some people (been there, done that), so if you are just going to hibernate until it's all over, ((HUGS)) to you.

And for those who are going all out in an attempt to wash away the gross aftertaste of 2016, ((HUGS)) for you as well!!

Finally, for those who are all good and happy, excited for Christmas and what the new year will bring, ((HUGS)) for you :-)

Xoxo

Hope you all had a wonderful festive time.

Alex; good luck. I KNOW how tough that governement money is to get/keep, so all the best with that. I do wish they'd put somebody in charge who actually has the first clue about mental health issues and how to help rather than hinder.

Here's hoping 2017 is happy and healthy for us all (((BIG HUGS)))

Groovy Lee I'm going to be honest with you people. The New Year isn't going to be any better than the last (I know. Pessimist! Burn her!)

But what I do hope, is that each and every one of you find happiness through the tough times, achieve success with your hard work, and remember to be thankful for all the blessings that come your way--And hug a love one everyday!

Thank-you for being my forum buddies--and good-bye 2016!

HUGSSS!!!

I sure hope it's better! I don't think I've had a tougher year than 2016. In fact, I know I haven't. But yes, all the more reason to hug your loved ones everyday.

As far as professionally, it will probably be more of the same. Lots of work planting seeds and waiting for them to harvest. (No, I don't have a greenhouse, I'm still rambling about writing.) But yeah, I'm sure it will take some time. Good thing for me, I've listened to Les Brown tell the story of the Chinese bamboo tree! If you've never heard it, it's super inspiring:) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASAU1...

Thanks again, Groovy! I love your realistic, yet totally positive vibes ;)

message 721: by Groovy (last edited Dec 29, 2016 08:13PM) (new)

Groovy Lee **a great big giant hug to you, Alex** I hope you achieve your goals one step at a time. I'm rooting for you.

And thank you, Amie. For anything to be worth something, it takes lots of planting and harvesting, right? I'm rooting for you, too:)

**Oh my goodness, I just watched the bamboo tree video. Everyone here should listen to it. It's very inspiring! Thanks for that, Amie:)**

message 722: by B.A. (new)

B.A. A. Mealer | 975 comments Hugs to everyone who needs one. I love hugs and give a lot of them to people I meet.

As to the new year...that positive outlook is something you need to work on...a lot. The way you think is how things will go. Every time I find my thoughts going negative, I mentally slap myself and start a litany of positive thoughts. Remember, what you put out there will come back to you ten fold...so if you are negative....?

For today, think of all the good things about you, your life and the world around you. Be grateful for that roof over your head, the food for you to eat and the ability to see, hear, and feel the beauty around you. Smile. Say thank you, give a hug, a kind word, do something nice for someone....it all adds up.

(Sort of like my boss coming and telling me to start to work early because I'm already here...good things happen with good thought!)

message 723: by Jane (new)

Jane Jago | 888 comments This is the moment when you know you are going to need a LOT of hugs.

You get seated at your restaurant table and the waitress says:
'The chef will be along in a minute to explain the menu.'

Aaargh. The temptation to say 'You are okay. I can read.' was almost overwhelming

message 724: by Carole (new)

Carole P. Roman Wishing everybody a happy and healthy New Year.

message 725: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee I agree, Alex. Give me Burger King, McDonald's, and Subway any day:)!! (When I'm not in the mood to cook)

Carole, the same to you:) I already made my sappy speech in message 787, so I won't repeat. But a BIG **Hug** to you!

message 726: by Groovy (last edited Dec 30, 2016 02:22PM) (new)

Groovy Lee Those are the best kind, Alex. I wish I had a plate to help you enjoy all the good food! LOL!

message 727: by Amie (new)

Amie O'Brien | 280 comments Ha ha! I ate Special K for breakfast, an Asian chopped salad for lunch, had 3 glasses of water...all so I could eat one of those yummy tubs of self-serve frozen yogurt and call it dinner.

(Hey, baby steps, alright!)

message 728: by T.L. (new)

T.L. Clark (tlcauthor) | 727 comments Eurgh! If the chef has to EXPLAIN the food he's doing a poor job!! I actually had a meal in France once where there was a snooty waiter, the kind I thought obly existed in films..."Here we have steak, cooked in blah blah blah..." gesturing with an open palm at the food I could quite clearly distinguish! But it was good.

I like fancy restaurant food. Hate the snobbery though.

So, yeah, 2016 is a mixed bag as I tie it up to chuck in the rubbish bin! ;p
Between you and me, it's the lowest sales figures I've had in 3 years!! ;(
I didn't release a new book this year :(

BUT I did release one into my first ever paperback; yay! :)
And I'm over halfway through book 6. yay again :)
And I'm free from work, so I've bought myself some writing time. Triple yay :)

2017? Who knows what it will bring? But I wish you all success and happiness.

(((GOOD LUCK HUGS)))

Nothing but positive thoughts and plenty of hugs sent your way :)

Erica Graham (erica_graham) | 46 comments After a couple fairly successful months of sales, I am wrapping up my first month of nothing. As I was reading through this thread, I noticed many other authors going through the same thing. While the feeling is incredibly disappointing I want to encourage everyone to press on and remember why we write. The thought of being able to make a living off writing is exciting, but that is not why we write. We write as a way to express ourselves and give others a place to escape, a place to dream, a place to laugh, a place to cry, and a place to belong. If we allow ourselves to be consumed by the obsession of those we have not reached, we will never feel the joy of those we have. Hugs to everyone who can use one right now. Best of luck in the new year. Keep writing!

message 731: by T.L. (new)

T.L. Clark (tlcauthor) | 727 comments Welcome to hug fest Erica. :)
Yes; we write because we love it.
The success is pressing the publish button; readers and reviews are just icing on a yummy cake. xx

Thanks Debbie. I'm OK. I had a wobble ages ago, but this thread continues on as an arm of support.
So many authors go through these wobbles, and it's nice to have a place to go to where everyone can offer everyone else a shoulder to cry on, a hug and plenty of woofy hugs. :)

So, (((Happy new Year Hugs)))
and a pinch of good luck to you all
xx

Dog has some spare too. Although his are a bit hairy and smelly, and come with 'optional' licks

message 734: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee **Hugs to everyone!** I hope you're all doing well, so far. It's day 5 in the new year.

Just finished the cover on my new book through Canva, which is fun. Not only do I save myself $200, but you get the satisfaction of knowing you did it yourself!

Anyway, **HUGS**

message 738: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee You too, TL. Keep us up on your progress. And I hope you're completely healed from your ailment. I've been thinking about you.

A big weekend HUG for everyone! Be careful, especially if you live in a cold, snowy state. I almost slid into a ditch today:) LOL!

message 739: by T.L. (new)

T.L. Clark (tlcauthor) | 727 comments Aww Groovy that's so sweet! Yeah, pretty much there now thanks. Still get tired quite easily, but I reckon 95% healed. :)

I wrote another 4000 words Fri, and a curse yesterday (only a quick little 568 word count as I'm resting over the weekend) ;P
Read an awful lot this week (for me).
I shan't link to my blog here as it's probably against rules, but I do blog my fave books I review. :)

T.L. Clark (tlcauthor) | 727 comments (*yoink*) takes a big, hairy, slobbery, smelly doggle hug :)

I need it. I was this close (II) to getting into the biggest UK bookstore. Only to find out although I've achieved one part (with much effort), that there's another stage to complete.
They really don't make it easy for indies!! :(
But hopefully I'll achieve this next bit then I'll finally see my book on an acutal shelf in a bookstore! :)

So nay and yay all at once. I have hope!

Hope you're all having a good staart to the year.

message 742: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Hope you get through the second stage, TL.

You think they make it hard for Indies today. This is nothing compared to how we used to be treated. A lot of us were stoned:)
