Announcement: Combining and Merging Partially Reenabled

Guess what happens when we tell all of you that deletions are re-enabled? Several days' worth of deletions are put through in a matter of hours. We applaud your enthusiasm!
But you may notice that some of the deletions take a few hours to go through. This is not a bug. It's just a bit of a traffic jam. It's fine to keep deleting editions that need deletion, but please try not to delete the same editions twice.
Thanks!

I'm confused. 1000 shelvings on combines? I've never paid attention to the number of shelvings on combines. Then you say nothing about merging being enabled, yet now there is a traffic jam. These are somewhat different procedures, so what does "partially" mean?
Deletions have been queued for several years now. That is not a recent change. The queue is currently quite a bit longer than usual, because so many librarians added deletions to the queue in a very short period of time. So instead of taking a few minutes to go through, some deletions may take a few hours.
As far as the 1000 shelving limit on combines, you still don't need to check how many a particular combine has in advance. The system will check that for you. It is likely that almost all of the combines the average librarian would do on a regular basis will fall within that limit. In the few cases where more than 1000 shelvings are affected, you would get an error message, rather than the successful combine message.

Excellent! The books I work on are generally little-known public domain ones, so it's pretty much back to normal for me.

Another librarian separated the stories for you.
Please start a new thread next time, as this is not the right thread for requests.

Sorry, I have been busy merging with my man lately, I missed some updates XDThank you for all the nerdie job!
Is there any update on when we can expect merging/combining editions with over 1,000 shelvings back? Thanks!
I have a new book cover for WHERE HOPE DARES. Will it be possible to replace the old one with the new one?

There has been some progress towards being able to re-enable it, but I have not been able to pin down a concrete time estimate quite yet.

We previously announced that we had temporarily disabled combines for planned maintenance work. We have now partially reenabled the ability to combine. Combines will work when the operation only affects 1000 shelvings. If you attempt a combine operation that affects (that is, "moves") more than 1000 shelvings, you will see an error message. Merges affecting more than 1000 shelvings also will not work. If you attempt a merge which will affect more than 1000 shelvings, you'll see the error message.
For example, you should be able to merge a "small" book into a "big" book, so merging a new edition into a Harry Potter book will work. However, merging Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will not.
We'll continue to post further updates to the group. Please let us know on this thread if you have any questions or concerns!
